B3 & B4 taillights - interchangeable???

1931 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  N'Syncro
I currently have a B3 and I saw some amazing B4 lights on one of the earlier posts that I would love to put on my car. Anyone know if the taillights are interchangeable between the B3 & B4?

They will fit, but you will have to do drill new mounting holes since the B3 and B4 have different mounting holes. You might also have to enlarge the openings for the bulb harnesses.
Although B4 tails would look cool on a B3, you won't have quite the same look as if it were a B4 because B3's have a small crease down the side (that continues into the taillights), B4's don't.

I'm not sure about this, but would the black plastic panel between the tail lights on the B3 need to be removed, as the B4's don't have this. If it was removed, are there any unsightly holes or shapes in the metal behind the panel?
Just something to think about before spending out on new lights!

These are the tail lights I was looking at. I would love to be able to put these onto my B3! http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=224292
If the dimensions of the tail lights and back lights are the same as on the B3 then I should be able to make them fit. The back lights look like they might be a little wider than the one I currently have. If necessary I was thinking of getting the middle part off of a B4.
Anyways, depending on what the lights would actually cost me, if I cannot get them to work, I bet that I would be able to action them off for about what I actually paid for them because of how rare they are in North America.
Just trying to talk myself into it.

Not Bad! Any chance you can tell what they are going to cost you? and who you are getting them from? Would appreciate it! Thanks ahead of time.

~$225cdn plus any duties / VAT tax. I got them off German Ebay.

And a good deal for them, too!

Hey Ken...What would this light set-up that i've gotten be called?? Hella GT style tail lights? (like on the euro passat GT's? Did any other Passats get these lights?)
And what is the english word equivalent for "Rückleuchten rot/schwarz"? (the middle peice / license plate holder)
Re: B3 & B4 taillights - interchangeable??? (N'Syncro)

Oh, they're a decorative thing from Hella, though they WERE offered in extremely limited quanities on stock cars. They're in the European copy of ETKA.

It means "rear lights, red/black"
Re: B3 & B4 taillights - interchangeable??? (candyweißpassat)

Ken: didn't any passats get the tinted tail lights like this?? (excluding the center peice)
candyweibpassat: I was hoping there was a name for the middle peice...instead of just calling it the "middle peice"

You can call it a middle blend or center blend actually. The German name is heckblende, meaning tail blend...
Re: B3 & B4 taillights - interchangeable??? (N'Syncro)

Sorry, yes, some had the red/black tail lights. Just not too common apparently.
