Well, this morning I decided to wash my car (92 GTI 16v) and everything was fine, on the way back I took the freeway and my car starts smoking all of the sudden, it started to smoke very badly. So I pull over to see what was up, I open the hood and there is a bunch of smoke coming out of the exhaust manifold. So I try to figure out where is all that oil coming from.
After a while I figure that all the oil is coming from the tranny, the right wheal seal on the tranny is busted and is spilling/throwing oil all over the place. I figure OK, not bad Ill fix it and it will not cost that much, well I get back into the car and start it. When I put it in 1st gear I let go of the clutch and the car does not go anywhere. That is where I started to get pissed.
I guess what had happened is that all the gear oil got into the clutch as well. I do not know how this happened but I was really sad. I do not know what to do, I have a rebuilt transmission in the car and it was done about 1.5 years ago. The clutch is freeken brand new. Real disappointing.
Did this happen to anyone? Can anyone elaborate?
What I think I need is a new clutch and all new seals? Is that so? I had 3 vw’s so far and this was the first time that some thing like this happened. Is this a common problem on the 92 16v? I would hate to give up on this car but if it keeps going on like this I will have to sell the deam thing. It has 100k on it, just turned. Please help

Did you replace the rivets when you had it rebuilt before?

It sounds like the classic self machining problem. If you're lucky, yeah, the output seal gave out and you can just seal it back up and go. Otherwise it might be time for another tranny/rebuild

What about the clutch problem? It slips now; it did not do it before. Does that mean I need another clutch? I would really hate to rebuild it again, if it comes to that I am throwing the car away. I am not about to spend another $800 on a rebuild plus the hi-po clutch and all that good stuff.
About the rivits I presume they have been done, since the shop did it all.
This is bull………..

I am beginning to hate my car.

The clutch is part of why I'd suspect it holed itself. I'd start by cleaning up. If the tranny housing around the diff is actually intact, it's possible something else happened. Do you still have the timing hole cover inplace on your tranny? If not oil coulda got in that way. Until you get a chance to look around the engine bay there's no way to really know.
Actually, once the oil drained out of the tranny it might not work right anyway, so see if you can look into that. You gotta take the tranny out to replace the seal, and once you do that it'll probably be pretty clear if the clutch is really damaged.
And yeah, if you've seen my car you'll know that I'd be happy to take yours off your hands if you wanna throw it away.
