Bad fuel consumption & idle problem... please help!

91 8V GTI.
I don't know if its because I've been hard on the gas pedal lately, but my fuel consumption is really bad at about 8km/L (used to be 10 or 10.4). I don't know what it is in miles per gallon but its pretty crappy.
I have had an idle problem for the longest time: my car, mostly when its hot, idles high at about 1500RPM and stays there.
I have recently changed my cat, I took out the A/C too very recently, I have a drilled airbox K&N, cam, header and free 2.5in SS exhaust.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

anyone have any ideas? please!
Re: Bad fuel consumption & idle problem... please help! (ajothy)

the idle problem sounds the same as mine...probably your ISV or vacumn leaks. Try cleaning the ISV and or unplugging it.

Here is the scoop,
I have cleaned my ISV yesterday night with brake cleaner and WD-40, plugged it back in this morning (with a bit liquid leftover not dried out completely). Its even worse than before!!! Now the car idles at 1500RPM (sorry before it was more like 1200RPM). Moreover, when I come to a stop in second gear, I let the RPMs fall to about 1100, clutch in and go to neutral, and as I do that the engine brutally revs up to 2200RPM and then stabalizes at 1500RPMs.
I was told that I could check my ISV by turning the ignition on without starting the car and try and feel a humming in the ISV... I don't, so does it mean its dead?
I am putting my car away for the winter this weekend, I would like to avoid dealing with this when I take it back out next spring... any help would be appreciated! thanks.
Re: Bad fuel consumption & idle problem... please help! (ajothy)

try disconnecting the ISV (just the electrical plug) and running the car like that. i've disconnected mine cuz my ISV is screwed and it idles at 2k. now with the ISV disconnected, i idle at 900. the only draw back it that starting up you have to give the car a bit of gas to keep the car from stalling, but once the engine is warm, you're fine.

What is the idle speed with the isv disconnected?

I will try it and post the result... thanks!

Okay, so I took it out yesterday before heading from Montreal to Toronto. Actually, I simply unplugged the electronic connector and the car started perfect and idled perfectly 90% of the time I was driving in town! Around 850RPM. So who needs an ISV anyway???
I am a bit confused by all this.
On another note, I was challenged by a modified Prelude on the 401 coming into TO at 195km/h... felt like Getaway in Stockholm. The traffic was a little dense and I feel stupid to have done that, but hey, I will not be revving my dub for another 4 months!!! (and no winter beater too, its BMW time for me, bus-metro-walk). I stayed behind the Prelude in a distance, could not catch up to it but kept the same pace. He drew the guns out first anyways so it was hard to hit at 210 and crawl up to him!
Let me know what you guys think of this ISV thing please!
ciao!

multimeter, or just press it by hand with the throttle open some and see if there is a difference. it's just an on/off switch.
