Bad Service - Gonzo Tuning / GTS Performance Review

Hi all,

I have been a long time member of VW Vortex and found it a fantastic resource and wealth of knowledge for the R32 I purchased new back in 2003. I rarely post on here but frequently find myself lurking. It's very rarely I find myself with the urge or the need to post on these forums.

I'm not one to talk badly about people or businesses without good cause - but I have to make my dire experience public to avoid further members of the VW R32 circles getting burnt by Gonz @ GTS Performance - of whom I also believe is a forum sponsor.

I'm more than aware that most people who have used his services have had a good experience (which I used as a judgement to regrettably purchase his services) and I may very well be in minority - I hope! But Gonz has had every chance possible to rectify the problems and short comings with his services I have experienced in remapping my Euro MKIV R32.

I have documented and saved all e-mails to and from Gonz so if the credibility of my public complaint is in question please don't hesitate to get in touch with me directly before you criticise my public posts on this ongoing and so far never ending situation.

In short - I was made aware of GTS Performances/ Gonzo Tuning special offer on $100 off remaps in June of this year through a friend and on a facebook promotion.

It made sense to me as I had been having issues with the MAF sensor on my MKIV R32 so to go MAFless made even more sense and Gonzo markets his business in a way that his map would eliminate the MAF for an extra $100 over and above the base map price. Which seemed like a good cure to the issues I had been facing and a decent long term solution providing the map was up to scratch - these things you won't know until the map in on the car.

Anyway, the purchase was completed online. Gonzo answering some simple questions without any issue, replying to e-mails in a timely manner leading up to the purchase. All seemed well. A couple weeks later I received the cable to use with the downloadable flash loader which was inadequate to do the job. I ended up having to loan a VAGCOM cable from a friend to complete the upload which was done remotely by Gonzo himself using my computer.

I was hoping the remap would of been production ready, uploaded without any issues. Which I believe is a realistic expectation from a customer's point of view. This couldn't have been further from the truth. Both the ESP lights and CEL were permanently on. The car threw a lot of codes using VAGCOM. None of which were present prior to the remap. I tried using the car for a couple days afterwards to see if things would improve and if Gonz would get back to me with revised map with improvements as promised. This promise never materialised and I had the car checked out as driveability suffered to a point the car can't be driven safely. Plus concerns of the quality of the mapping meant I didn't want to risk engine damage. It has been suggested the timing is out.

It was advised I get the original map put back onto the car and ask for a refund which Gonzo agreed to. I had to go away on business for a couple weeks and I later e-mailed Gonzo for him to set a time and date to reflash the car back to OEM and issue the refund. I had no objections with working around his schedule - The time came, I popped him an e-mail saying we were good to go one hour before schedule. Another e-mail with an update saying I am good for the remote to go ahead. Approximately three hours sat around in my car checking for replies to my e-mails were wasted. Nada. Nothing. Even tried phoning internationally to get in contact directly. And still nothing. He never kept to his word. Five days later and I am still waiting. No solution, no promises kept.

My R32 is still off the road as a precaution - it's now been a month. I am giving Gonzo more than a reasonable amount of time to respond but I can't keep my car off the road for much longer so I will have to find an alternative MAP to upload to the car in the meantime.

Please please use his services with caution.

Kind Regards
Klint-R32

Sorry to hear what has happened. People these days have no remorse for their actions. Good luck!

I have heard similar situations about this 'company'.

In a couple of the larger MK4 facebook groups, I've seen a lot of guys indicating his tunes are usually really good (likely for the 1.8T, that is where most MK4 tuners make their money, I figure), but they would rather get one used than direct. Sounds something akin to how the Volx lights situation was for a while.

I've dropped you a PM about other options, as I do not want to cloud a review thread with other companies names, in case of google grouping it in if guys search.

Sorry to hear. This might be the first time I've ever heard of anyone doing a Gonzo tune on an R. He's known in the 1.8T circles but I frankly wouldn't ever send a car to him. Hope your issues get taken care of. Regardless of how it goes, find a way to get the United Motorsports tune, you'll be much happier and have a proven tune

Call you credit card/bank company and tell them the situation and you'll get your re-fund. Also waterfest is this upcoming weekend and a lot of companies are having great deals on flashes. I will look into that and I'm sure you will get a good deal.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the comments, there has been some good advice. Unfortunately the bill has been settled so any refund has to come directly from Gonzo himself.

Please use caution when using his services.

I'd avoid Gonzo Tuning/GTS Performance like the plague. The quality of the mapping and the customer service seriously requires attention. I also think there is a bit of an attitude problem too.

Since going public with my complaint I am happy to say I have now finally heard back from Gonz.

Reason being for being let down last Saturday to complete the reflash back to stock was that he was sick since Friday. Yet no effort has been made to reply until now??

He has also made me aware that my "post on VWVortex was unnecessary to say the least". And has since offered to pay 50% refund upfront and will pay the rest when the car is reflashed back to stock - whenever that will be and how much time wasting, messing around and poor excuses do I need to experience for the other 50%??

If you are not local to GTS Performance, or close enough to visit him in person I would steer clear of any product. I have never ever felt so dissatisfied with a company in a long time.

Kind Regards

Ok, just a quick update. Gonz has got back to me after seeing this thread, and as per company policy on refunds I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and we are in the early stages of rescheduling the flashback to OEM at a time that works for us both. Hopefully this will be completed this Sunday and we will finally have this ordeal brushed under the carpet for good. Fingers crossed.

Quick update on this to keep you all posted.

Still trying to arrange a date and time to have this situation resolved and a refund issued. A couple more broken promises and failures to reply have happened since the last update. It seems I am asking for the impossible at this point of time and I am looking at other options that Gonz has been made aware of.

Soo, how things have gone so far! Gonzo Tuning / GTS Tuning is a gash tuning outfit. And that's being polite.

I've consistently been giving him the benefit of the doubt and have tried numerous times to schedule a time and date with Gonz to have the car flashed back to standard. He has failed to answer e-mails and/or phone calls to allow this to take place.

As per company policy I did make him aware that I wanted this to take place and a full refund issued well within the 30days notice period.

I have since had a specialist look at the car. We were successful in having his map taken off the car, we've had it analysed and it turns out it is a substandard low quality map, complete bollocks in other words. The car has since been put back to OEM and is now running fine. I'm just waiting for a full refund. So far nothing. I'm not holding my breath either.

For your own sake please don't use his (lack of) services.

Well well well, it appears Gonzo is quite some fraudster. I have since had five people contact me with similar stories regarding his conduct and business practices.

And failures to deliver goods and services that have been paid for through his website then later failing to provide a refund - even after a couple years of trying.

If you or anybody you know has been a victim of this fraudster please send them my way and I will forward details onto the person on how to take it to the next level as we are currently building a case against him. So more the merrier.

Stay tuned. (no pun intended)

Thank You

Interestingly enough, still no word from Gonz.

I had a quick look at his Facebook page today, it appears there is a new status update promoting his business posted on the 3rd of September for Labor Day discount of $100 on remaps.

"GTS Performance

3 September at 06:30 ·

.
Labor Day sale! $100 off all software. Use coupon code "LABORDAY" when checking out."

There has also been a couple of bad one star reviews (one by me) removed from his page and another from another individual. All posts from visitors have also been deleted.

His facebook page can be found here:

https://www.facebook.com/GTS.Perfomance.USA/timeline

Please please share this topic with anyone wo is interested in using his services. He is clearly running a fraudulent tuning outfit and we don't want anymore victims.

Thank You

Bump. Just a quick bump to remind people to use this guy at your own risk.

I was left in the lurch with a substandard map with no refund or aftersales customer support/apology.
