Battle of the Beaters...

Hey I just dug up some old Car and Drivers and stumbled upon the October '97 issue. Near the back they handed 3 writers $1000 to find a beater. First beater was a '79 RX-7 with 145,000 "plus or minus 100,000". Second was a '82 VW Rabbit (the guy somewhat turned it into a GTI?) and the third was a '84 Chevy Camaro Berlinetta.
All said and done it was a damn funny article. My reason for posting it on the VWVortex board probably is obvious by now! The quasi-GTI defeated the other beaters! Allow me to toss in a few quotes:
"I'd like to thank my tire sponsors: Dunlop, Goodyear, Rikken, and probably one other company soon... by the looks of that right front" Mazda RX-7 owner commenting on his 'victory' in the "off-road-ability" category.
"The RX-7 is fun, well suited for charging hard to the redline in every gear, it's the kind of car you have to be ready to get hurt in." Hahaha

Ah well, I highly suggest grabbing your Oct '97 issue if you have a stack of these things like I do. Cheers!

I remember that article! In fact, someone just wrote a letter to them(that they published) asking why they hadn't done another one like it since. I thoroughly agree...that was an awesome artilce! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

That article is hilarious, but that's not surprising, considering John Phillips wrote it. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I pretty much crapped my pants laughing while reading that article. It IS my favorite C/D article ever written. John Phillips is on some great stuff.

"The Camaro took on the nickname "Uncle Buck". The GTI somehow got the name Tricia Nixon. And the RX-7 acquired the happy-go-lucky monicker "That total sh!tbox in the parking lot."
ROTFLMAO!!!!

Thanks! I had to read that, and as I don't often get out of the house, the internet is oft times my only link to the outside world; and because of you generous posting of the above URL, I was able to chuckle at the cars that are 'better' than a Rabbit when they lost all those tests...
