My mother has been complaning of drivability problems in her 2000 VW Beetle 2.0 automatic.
When giving it over 10% throttle the rpms do not go up, it missfires and then sometimes catches itself and starts to climb the rpms. If I let off the throttle durring the missfiring the rpms will jump up and then decend. This is all in park or neutral BTW. If I am rollin the car down the road and decide to give it more than 10% throttle it will never give me any power, the transmission might kick down a gear but power will never pick up until I let off below 10%.
The car drives fine all the way up to redline as long as I keep the throttle under 10%.
The check engine light has been on.
The first thing I did was pulled the codes. The code reader spat out missfires on every cylinder and a lean 02 code. I first figured the lean 02 code was just because of the misfires not burning off the oxygen.
I then checked the plugs, they were fine.
Scratching my head I decided to check a fuel delivery problem since the ignition system ran fine at high rpms and checking the ignition system is nearly impossible on this pile. I checked the fuel pressure, it was within spec. I gave it a propane injection and that seemed to invoke some power, and some nasty backfires. At that point I realized that the lean 02 condition was not just because of the misfires, there was a real lean situation going on.
At this point I am thinking it is a major PCM sensor input such as the TPS, MAF, or coolent temp sensor. I ran out of time to actuall check the sensors, what do you all think may be the problem?

Do you know the exact codes returned? Try searching the VAG-COM forum here with the codes... there's lots of good troubleshooting info there about determining if it's O2, MAF, fuel problems, etc.
edit: Also, sup Goon?

Re: Beatle lays over in power when giving it more that 10% acceleration (AekaGSR)

It could be a lot of things, but it sounds like it could be the cat. Lean condition might be coming from hosed-up O2 sensor(s), which were a subject of a recall on our '99 (PCM programming fired them off too soon after start).
But the 10% power up followed by misfires sounds like the catalytic convertor is clogged - rare on NBs that young, but I've had the same thing on other cars.
Good luck.

Re: Beatle lays over in power when giving it more that 10% acceleration (LGA)

Well my car is having a very similar problem. The CEL is on. My problem is that idle, or less than 10% throttle the car is sluggish, and wants to stall. Then once past 10% throttle the car is like a slingshot as full power returns. I spent all weekend trying to repair the problem to no avail. I replaced the fuel filter, plugs, and wires. I also check everything that I thought could be causing the problem, but couldn;t fix it. It goes to the dealer on Thursday. This could be expensive.

Below is the VAG-COM reading.
