Started on phase 1 of the build today. Trying to learn from my mistakes and take my time for once. Originally the plan was to do a build the TDI up but after a lot of research I found it will never reach the numbers I want. To even get 200hp out of an ALH I'd have to spend ALOT of money. I realize the torque would be well above that but after my little mishap at H2O this year I recon its time for a a big change. The TDI is out VR going in. I'll being doing bits here and there through out the winter. Still doing my research on what I'll be doing to the VR. Gotta do some brain storming with the guys over at HS Tuning. Plenty of non motor stuff happening too.
Wish me luck. :beer:

Day 1

Tomorrow planning on pulling the dash and removing the harness.

a fully built TDI billowing big black clouds of smoke is so cool and something you dont see everyday tho :(
a fully built TDI blowing black smoke = YOUR DOING IT WRONG!!! :screwy:

....smoke = lost power....:facepalm:

OP is correct, a built TDI is wicked expensive.....there are a few builds going on right now that will be breaking the 300hp barrier w/o n2o....but they are few and far between.....its much easier to take a VR, throw a headgasket spacer in, a big turbo on and make 400hp....

you should only really need to pull the harness from the bay...just unclip the colored plugs from the drivers side access panel that connect the engine harness to the body harness....then the other side of the engine harness should just come out of the bay only....really shouldnt take too long

p.s. - just read that you were planning on pulling the dash...you really should not need to do that for a swap....unless you planning on going crazy and tucking wires and such while your in there....and actually unless your shaving the rain tray there is still not much use in pulling the dash:thumbup:
