I recently purchased a 2000 beetle from a used car lot in mid July this year. The car is beautiful and well maintained and runs excellent. Today I noticed my check engine light came on. The car is running fine I see nothing nor feel anything wrong. Does anyone have any pointers as to what I can check myself before taking to a dealer. The light is solid and not flashing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be anything. The only way to find out for sure is to scan the ECU and that will tell you the fault code that will say what's wrong.

Here's my two guesses:
Gas cap not tightened completely (remember not to leave the engine running while fueling). Click a minimum of six clicks when tightening.
Or the vacuum hoses need to be replaced. (code 0411)

Everytime i had a check engine light which was twice i pulled negative off battery... never came back....
WORST PROBLEM I HAVE HAD IS BRake light switch breaking twice in one year

well gang i did the gas cap trick took it off and back on and now no engine light. amazing how picky and i was worried

Click the gas cap a minimum of six clicks when tightening. That's my rule-of-thumb anyway.
