I've never seen the original Death Race but this sounds promising:
Quote »
"We did keep the anti-authoritarian 'screw you' tone of the original," director Paul W.S. Anderson, told us, citing Bullitt, The Getaway and the original Death Race 2000 as influences.
"All those films were done practically. I said 'Let's make a real movie. With real armor-plated cars. With real machine guns. A really intense car movie. No CGI cars. No CGI environments.' The laws of physics apply in Death Race." If there's any CGI at all, Anderson promises, it will be solely to clean up individual film frames to rid them of stunt rigging, other cameras in the shot and the like."

Re: Behind the Scenes of Death Race (mgyip)

Death Race 2000 was great, very 70's. This one doesn't seem to be directly following that premise though. Probably had to get rid of things like my favorite scene where the nurses wheel all the gerry's out in the road.
I'm hoping they can transform this into a decent video game though, along the lines of Twisted Metal.

Great video game - I used to play that quite a bit and would periodically talk about "That would have been an Extra Style Bonus" whilst driving on the street. Needless to say, I had more than a few wide-eyed passengers when I elaborated on the definition of an Extra Style Bonus.

if this Movie spurs a Carmageddon to be made for the PS3/xBox I would sell everything I had to get a copy of it if I had to (minus the console and TV of course!). I loved that game and I am saddened that I can't install it on my new PC. =(

Hmmmmmm. I think I could watch that.
Great. There's another movie that will be hard to schedule in this year. (I have small kids at home.)

That image that everyone is quoting sure does remind me of the original Carmageddon artwork:

I remember watching the original when I was 6 years old. There was some truly horrifying violence in it as well as disturbing ideas in general. I have to say the no CGI idea is a good one.
