I am going to be getting a new car pretty soon, and I want it to be pretty fast. What is the best car to get for this amount of money. It can be just a car, or a car + mods ($8000 car + $4000 in mods). I am open to any suggestions, they do not have to be VW's.

Re: Best car for 12K (mk1g60)

Like everyone else said... you have to know what type of car you want... but face it... you're gonna have to buy a car that's atleast 4 years old.. personally, I would just buy a car from late 80's, early 90's and just either replace the engine or mod the hell out of it... this will allow you to first, start out with a reasonably light car, then add on... the amount of money you will spend on a car that's 10 yars old will leave you with plenty of $$$ to do pretty much anything you want within reason, ie: no twinturbo'd gti's or anything.... just look around and see whats right for you http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

One obvious choice is a Mustang. Not horrendously heavy, cheap to buy, cheap and easy to mod.
Otherwise, take your cues from Grassroots Motorsports $2002 challenge. Maybe older DSM turbos, Chrysler Omni turbos, etc. Even high mileage 300zx turbos can be found at that price, but you won't have much left for mods. I won't recommend a 944 Turbo to anyone with a budget.

Since you live in a warm climate, you can drive a sports car year round. Can you say Porsche 951?

If buying new, a stripped Focus ZX3 is a good deal. Other used cars to consider are the A3 Jetta/GTI VR6, Contour SVT (have they hit $12k yet?), '96 Audi A4, Nissan 240SX...there are a lot of nice cars to be had for that amount of money. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

"pretty fast". these are the only three words you need to remember when shopping:
Porsche
944
Turbo

Man I can't even believe you guys said 944. If your looking at 12k, you can't afford the possible situation that COULD arise. If somthing happened you would be without transportation, this is not good. I have owned a couple Porsche's, and would have to say wait until you have more (UNLIMITED) dough.

i spent more fixing my nissan s-box than i did my 924 and i drove the 924 ten-tenths. the 944 is no more expensive than the Scirocco 16V. go ahead, ask me how i know. if i had unlimited dough i'd buy something from 2001, like a GTI, but i don't.

Re: Best car for 12K (Obin Robinson)

haha CP. i was going to say 240sx... but i was waiting for him to specify what kind of car he wanted

12k would build one hell of an S13. Chasis (great condition S13 coupe (little stiffer) or hatchback (better looking). 4k), coilovers (1.5k), rims/tires (2k), black top sr20det (2.5k), FMIC kit(1k), misc parts (boost controller/s-AFC/VLSD from either the non turbo 300z, the infinity J30, or other 240 of the same chasis/any small parts you are missing from the swap, 1k) and your at 12k.
that's probably going to put you in a car pushing around 250hp, will pull .9x+ g's on the skid pad, and with a good driver do 13's (i've seen as low as high 12's on a T3/T4 hybrid. which btw will mount onto the stock sr20det exhaust manafold with an adaptor for the bolts)
just my thoughts.

My father got one for just a little more ($13k) that is in great shape. It's got 90,000 miles on it though. Still runs strong and feels good, and it's got a sport package on it. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Best car for 12K (TabulaRasa)

It's just me, but when I see a car like that, that's been modded (brakes, wheels etc), I wouldn't want to be the next owner of it at 134,000.
There's a darn good chance that the previous owner beat the hell out of it, and when i buy a car with that many miles I want to know that nobody but granny smith has driven it.
Just my opinion.

It's an inline-5, they last forever.
It's an Audi S4, of course it's been beaten the hell out of--you'll be hard pressed to find one that hasn't. That doesn't mean it's not still a solid piece of machinery.
