Few of life’s simple pleasures are quite as nice as sliding into a soft, supple leather-upholstered car interior. Unfortunately, leather upholstery comes with a catch: it requires a good amount of care. Just like any leather, the cow-hide in your Volkswagen needs regular cleaning to keep looking and feeling its best. Leather may tend to stain less easily than fabric upholstery, but it still readily shows any dirt, dust, and grime buildup, and it can easily become scratched or dulled by repeated contact with surface contaminants. And in addition to regular cleanings, the leather-trimmed surfaces in your Volkswagen also need to be conditioned periodically to replenish lost moisture and keep them from drying out and cracking.

Have you ever seen a split, sun-faded leather interior in a decades-old car that wasn’t properly cared for? It’s a sorry sight.

Granted, this shouldn’t be news. Leather has been around for centuries, and in that time, people have learned plenty about how to best care for it. That’s given rise to a massive range of leather cleaners and related care products, many of which feature sophisticated modern formulations and pack powerful additives that deliver long-lasting protection against scratching, staining, and sun-fading. We’ve taken the liberty of poring over the options and rounding up the best leather cleaners for your Volkswagen here, in one convenient list.

1. Chemical Guys Complete Leather Care Kit
Brown Bottle Liquid Fluid Drink

Chemical Guys is one of our go-to sources for all things auto detailing. Why? Because the company is made up of seasoned pros who know what they’re doing. The Chemical Guys Complete Leather Care Kit, which comprises a leather cleaner spray and a wipe-on conditioner, is an excellent example of just what we’ve come to expect from them: a brilliant product that performs exactly as advertised and covers all the bases. The spray-on leather cleaner has been developed to penetrate the pores of your leather interior to suspend and lift out dirt and oils, with a colorless, odorless, pH-balanced formula that won’t alter the look, feel, or smell of your leather. Use it to return your leather to a squeaky clean “blank slate” sort of a state ready to be rejuvenated by the Chemical Guys Leather Conditioner – a gentle, easy-to-apply formulation that rehydrates your leather and restores its lost Vitamin E, with a subtle leather scent, to keep it looking and smelling fresh for months to come.

2. Leather Honey Concentrated Leather Cleaner

As leather care product manufacturers go, Leather Honey is one of the most well-known in the business, amassing an almost unparalleled reputation for quality over the past 50+ years with its simple, gentle leather cleaners and conditioners. There are two very simple reasons for this: it’s safe for just about all types of leather, and it just works. Leather Honey uses a natural formulation that won’t stain, harm, or dry out your VW’s leather upholstery, and one little 4-oz. bottle of this concentrated formula is enough to make 32 oz. of cleaner, easy to apply with either a spray bottle or a lint-free cloth. With decades of experience, thousands and thousands of satisfied customers, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee, this is one of those rare products that comes with essentially zero risk.

3. TriNova Leather Conditioner and Cleaner
Liquid Water Bottle Plant Fluid

Generally, we tend to steer clear from “two-in-one” products, as they have a tendency of underperforming at both of the tasks they claim to do. TriNova Leather Conditioner and Cleaner is an exception, and if we didn’t know any better, we could almost swear the stuff was magic. A fast-acting, quick-drying formula that’s somehow both gentle on leather and tough on stains, TriNova Leather Conditioner and Cleaner will leave your Volkswagen’s leather interior clean, shiny, and supple as new thanks to its powerful cleaning action and advanced formulation. This stuff offers advanced protection for your leather, too, helping prevent scuffing and UV ray damage from prolonged sun exposure. It’s truly the complete package.

4. Lexol pH-Balanced All Leather Cleaner
Brown Bottle Liquid Fluid Drink

Here’s the “dirty” truth about leather cleaners: a lot of them skew either a bit acidic or a bit basic, weakening the fibers in your leather a bit more with each application, and plenty more contain oils or waxes that can alter the leather’s color over time. Lexol pH-Balanced All Leather Cleaner, which is formulated to be safe on virtually all leathers, has neither problem. It’s a neutral but powerful dirt and stain remover that strips away contaminants safely, without harming the leather or clogging up its pores, and with a brand history stretching all the way back to 1933, Lexol has amassed an enviable reputation for making highly effective, safe leather care products you can trust.

The stuff has built-in UV ray protection, too, covering every aspect of leather restoration and protection in a very affordable, easy-to-apply package.

What to Know About Cleaning and Conditioning Leather

While it might seem like leather is leather, and all hides are essentially the same, that’s far from accurate. Truth be told, there are numerous leather grades and styles out there, and one type of leather can have radically different needs from another.

Thankfully, the leather used in VW interiors – and most other automotive interiors, for that matter – has usually been manufactured to be as hard-wearing, UV-resistant, and stain-resistant as possible; OEMs select their materials based on the use case, and Volkswagen is well aware of how the average passenger vehicle gets used. This means that while staining the leather with oils or waxes, or lifting out some of the dye and suffering color fade, might be concerns with, say, a nice pair of leather driving gloves, you generally won’t need to worry about that with most automotive leathers.

That said, if you really want your Volkswagen’s leather interior to keep looking and feeling its best, try to opt for cleaners that are pH-balanced (neither acidic nor basic) and free from oils and waxes. It’s important to remember that while you might not see any signs of damage after the first couple of applications, cheaper or more chemically aggressive leather cleaners could be doing damage to the leather’s fibers on a microscopic scale. And of course, after every leather cleaning, spend your time carefully, thoroughly applying a good quality leather conditioner and, preferably, some sort of protectant to give it some resistance to abrasions and UV damage. Big, visible scratches are of course unsightly, but even tiny, imperceptible micro abrasions can dull and ruin your leather’s finish over time, and if your leather is left unprotected, prolonged uneven UV ray exposure can leave faded or discolored patches that are hard to unsee and even harder to undo.
