Hi everyone
I just sold my 97K2 GL thinking about buying a New Golf , but I just testdrove a 00 GLS 2.0 and although its the same engine as my old 97 , it isnt as fast accelerating (I guess cuz the 00 model is heavier). So, im thinking, what mods can i get for the GLS mk4 that DOES NOT need premium gas? (im cheap that way,and we never know when gas prices are gonna shoot through the roof again!). Besides, if i end up needing premium gas, then i could just go for a 1.8T....but that's an option i'd rather not take. Im not a racer, but i'd like to go a bit faster than 2.slow...

Re: best mods for 2.0L (zooks76)

Chip, intake, exhaust, cam, cam gear,
$200,$200, $350, $300, $150. So about $1200 for that stuff plus installation. But it should get you 135-140 at the crank. That is about the limit before Forced Induction. You could get a good turbo kit, installed and ready to go for like $2100. Or A supercharger for about $3000. It is all about what you want. Frankly I am doing all of the above...... then a Z engineering supercharger, with intercooler.

Re: best mods for 2.0L (8v-inside)

I dont see why ppl getting on my case about not wanting to use premium gas. Plenty of cars out there with 150hp+ which use regular. And unlike mods that you buy once, and that's your only expense, with gas you're always bleeding your wallet away drop by drop, and I wanna see you guys praise it if/when gas prices go north of $2!

Besides, I really would prefer a 1.8T if it comes down to premium, so its not like I aint getting with the program. But I'd like to study how much I can get with regular gas on a 2.slow. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Hell i was paying $1.77 a gallon at one point, about 3 months ago. If you wanted to be cheap you should've gotten a Honda.
J/K but seriously though a chip is one of the best mods for a 2.0 Just think about what you want.

Re: best mods for 2.0L (A3Jetta)

well, i just testdrove another GLS Golf, this time a 00 model. It felt faster than the other one i drove, I dont know why? So, I may go for the GLS afterall, and put some mods as I find myself outrunning my car. BTW, this car is $15.5k , GLS, all options,13k miles. Is that a good price? I offered $15k. I really want that car!
Oh, just noticed, the first one i testdrove was a 01.

high compression likey high octane gas, fuel should burn evenly in a controlled environment thru ignition via sparkplug lower octane gas tends to detonate pre maturely cause of high pressure and temps which makes the explosion to resist the piston prior to top dead center (of comp. stroke)

I don't believe that premium gas is always the "better gas"and it's usually those ten year old beaters with the played out motors that often require the higher octane. So I would say if you if you want to save yourself some money just avoid the chip. $200(chip)+$150(money saved from buying "regular" for a year)=1 car payment. Hey thats like driving your car for a whole month for Free!

I got a cpo '00 Golf GLS with luxury and cold weather pkgs and in-dash cd for $14,600 before trade-ins with 18,200 miles. I could have gotten a '01 with 13k for the same price after trades ('95 geo metro-no second gear, '86 saab 900s, both over 100k) at another dealer, but I wanted Indigo. But, the price sounds about right.

Not to burst your bubble but they recomend using premium on the 1.8T and if yoiu look at any of the "real world" mpg estimates they are alot less fuel efficient then the 2.0l. The Epa rates them about the same but thats becuase they limp them around w/o hitting the boost. If you want to go quickly you have to open your wallet.
