Big RPM question... Please help.

585 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Jman5000
I drive a ton of highway, and in 5th gear my rpms read around 3500 going 80 or so. Is this normal for our cars? Is it safe to run at that engine speed for a long period of time?

i have an automatic 1.8t..i assume you have a 1.8t, but my rpms are straight up on the dah (3400 i believe) at 80mph (also steaight up on the dash) actually from about 50 mph- 90 mph the rpms and speed seem to 'follow' each other on the dash...i tohught that was cool, some girl at my school pointed it out and then i noticed it after she told me

That's about where I am at for around 80mph.
It's normal.

It's fine.

You see that red line on the tach?
As long as you are not past that red line, the engine is designed to run there at that engine speed for a long time.

Don't worry about it. At that rpm range my VR6 gets extra peppy, so I like it. As the last post said, just stay away from that red line.

You gotta remember that our cars were first designed to be "Bahn-burners" (in some sense of the phrase). As such, they can cruise all day long at 100mph and not even break a sweat. Our cars have very good cooling systems, too. Nothing to worry about.

PS to all.
It's always RPM...not RPM's
Just helping us vortexers sound ejumacated.
