Some kid tried to tell me that if you get bigger wheels and tires, that your speedometer will be inaccurate. Can someone please clarify how the speedometer actually works so I can explain myself to him? THanks

Re: bigger rims = speedo off? (cole)

Simple Really, you speedo if the overall diameter of the drive wheels are taller or shorter than the stock wheel/tire combo, the speedo will read faster (for shorter wheel tire combo) or slower (taller). Its all about the revolutions per mile of the tire. A lotta tire websites actually have a column with the RPM's listed for the different tire sizes, check it out.

o.k bigger wheels = to bigger turning for the wheel therefore your speedometer will be off as for gas consumptiom will incresse because of the added turning radious so you get
+ gas consumption
+ falty readout's on speedo
and i think that is all

That and if you have big heavy ass 17's your car accelerated like junk compared to the smaller stock wheels.
I think I will no longer go over 16" unless they are really light...

Re: bigger rims = speedo off? (late_apex)

quote:

205/40/17 is the same exact size as the stock steelies 195/60/14
Yep the exact same overall diameter.

not EXACTLY the same.
195-60-14 = 23.21 inch outer diameter
205-40-17 = 23.46 inch outer diameter (close, but not exactly same as stock)
205-45-16 = 23.26 inch outer diamter (closest to stock)
it is recommended that you DONT deviate more than .25 inch larger than stock.

Re: bigger rims = speedo off? (JetTAFLiTe)

btw, heres teh formula if you dont know it...(for 195-60-14 tires)
195 x .60 x 2 / 25.4 + 14 = 23.21
195: width of tire from sidewall to sidewall. measured in mm.
.60: aka aspect ratio; aka sidewall height. measured as a % of the width ie 60% of 195mm. (multiplied by 2 because there are 2 sidewalls...top and bottom)
25.4: used to convert mm to inches
14: rim size in inches.
