tilt+slide sunroof :
most vw and audi cars with factory (metal) sunroofs have same dimentions .
the scirroco A1 tilt and slide is the best one to go for .

Re: bored............... a few cheap d.i.y. mods (ian c - U.K.)

de-locked door handles :
simply remove handle (2 fix points)
and replace with rear handles from a 4 door jetta
in uk , later jettas had the chrome strip in black
if you want this but cannot find any :
make sure chrome trim is perfectly clean , and place the best quality black insulation tape over it , smooth down and once it's stuck solid trim with a sharp knife and be carefull edges don't mess up when you put them back on !!!
NOTE: you can get a different colour tape to match your car , eg. red tape on a red car .
NOTE : you will need alarm remote locking if you remove your door locks !!!

later vw steering wheels :
you can fit gti steering wheels from A2 gti's to an A1
if the splines are different , you can buy an adapter from the dealers .
i'll edit this post with part number when i dig it out later !!

clipper kit mods :
to get a different (lower) look :
remove small plastic spoiler from below front bumper and replace with golf 3 VR6 item , this is wider so you need to "cut-and-shut" on middle joint .
the part you took off can now be fitted under rear bumper
do the cutting where the exhaust tail-pipe comes through

Re: bored............... a few cheap d.i.y. mods (ian c - U.K.)

not sure on emission cars , but worx with euro engines :
find warm-up regulator of 16v golf or 5cylinder audi engine .
this looks identical to A1 , but has a vacuum pipe connection .
simply bolt it on and connect vac. tube to spare connection on inlet manifold .
gives fuel boost !!!!
i've done 2litres with piper 285 cam and throttle body mod below , big valves and very good port and polish (167bhp)..............this mod gets fuelling spot on !!

find throttle body with bigger butterfly valves of A2 gto or audi 5cyl.
will fit strait to inlet , but bigger throttles catch !!
neuspeed sell a spacer kit i believe , but all you have to do is remove inlet and grind clearance for it to fit .
make sure inlet is thoroughly cleaned out before you bolt back on !!!

you're going to need new inlet manifold gaskets ............ look at a few makes and buy the biggest , best quality you can .
while you got the inlet manifold off you may as well open up the ports to match the gaskets !!

Re: bored............... a few cheap d.i.y. mods (ian c - U.K.)

de-badged grill :
works best on A2 golfs as they have grill with wider slats .
on A1 use late clipper grill (5 slats)
take your time with this one !!!
you cannot rush it , or you get bad results !!

mark a strait line an inch or so either side of the badge
carefully cut down lines so you have a square hole where the badge used to be
on the spare grill you just bought , mark a square identical size in a part of the grill where there is no badge .
cut this out and try it for fit in the original grill , trim to fit .
next , i use a snap-on gas soldering iron to "weld" the slats one at a time to make sure everythings perfectly strait and in line .
then fill at rear with a flexible filler (i've used fibre-glass in past with no bad cracking) it doesn't really matter how neat on rear , coz no-one will see it , but if youre after perfection do it right !!
now fill at front of grill with plastic filler (again , ordinary filler will do it on the cheap but is a bit brittle)
sand to a PERFECT finish , prime with plastic primer and spray matt black .
you can also buy earolsol textured finish which looks good !!
if you have spare money i'd recommend to the cutting-and-shutting yourself , then let a proffesional body shop do the filling and spraying .
IF YOU HAVE SINGLE 7" EURO ROUND LIGHTS , THIS WILL MAKE THE CAR LOOK LOWER AND WIDER !!

a thing with the cabrio grill is the spotlamps

plenty more cutting-and-shutting to get rid of them , and you need more than one doner grill .
I HAVE MOVED BADGE FROM CENTRE OF SINGLE LAMP GRILL TO ONE SIDE NEXT TO HEADLIGHT .
LOOKS VERY COOOOOOOL

Re: bored............... a few cheap d.i.y. mods (ian c - U.K.)

rear wiper arm :
remove arm and replace with the much better looking fiat uno item
them remove trim from inside hatch and undo the 2 bolts on arm linkage .
spin and re-tighten
arm will now lay flat along bottom of window
NOTE : the arm points upwards from factory , so the heated window elements de-frost arm in winter . you loose this function .
NOTE: I HATE FITTING PARTS FROM OTHER MAKES OF CAR !!!!!!!!!

Re: bored............... a few cheap d.i.y. mods (ian c - U.K.)

brake servo :
bigger brake servo from golf 2 16valve can be fitted as a cheap brake up-grade .
a bit fiddly but can be done D.I.Y.
NOTE: IF YOU HAVE NO SKILL AT ALL , TAKE IT TO A SHOP !!!!
BRAKES ARE CRITICAL !!!!!!! IF LEAVE THEM TO THE PROFFESIONALS

REAR DISCS :
rear discs from a2 are SOOO easy to fit !!!
buy the full assenbly , make sure calipers aren't siezed !
all bolt on stuff
use hand'brake cable from A1 16v scirroco
also fit bigger A2golf 16v. master cylinder and servo .
an upgrade with all factory parts.......... i like this route to doing things !!

Re: bored............... a few cheap d.i.y. mods (ian c - U.K.)

headlights :
the players are on the pitch warming up , so i got time for another quick one !!!
euro headlights are poor !!!!!!!
you cannot fit uprated bulbs because the wiring will melt and burn !!

buy relays from the auto store and wire power to lamps through relay direct from battery .
then use original wiring to switch relay .
no load placed on original wiring , and full battery power to bulbs !!!
even with factory bulbs there is a big improvent .

wieghted shift rod :

A3 8v gti's with rodbox came from factory with wieghted rod
approx $20.00 from dealers
looks "factory" when fitted - because it is !!!!

lower strut brace :

should have been top of the list really , as its probobly the first mod you should do !!
some later cabrio's and skyrocket 16valves had them from factory .
if you can find one in a scrap-yard , its another 5 minute genuine part mod .
