So i went out last week and bought the 2009 Kawasaki Ninja EX250R! I got the bike for ~$4500 plus a pretty nice free helmet and cheap mesh jacket. I've ridden the bike only a few miles to and from the dealership. (I got LoJack installed the day after i bought it) Its only going to cost me ~$400 a year to insure the bike, which is great (liability coverage). Im really excited, as owning a bike has been a dream of mine since i was a wee squirt. My first purchasing plans are buying a nice leather Alpine Star jacket, gloves and possibly riding shoes/boots. I have not signed up for the safety course as of yet, but I'm getting my permit today and will be taking the course soon. Here are some pics!

It's nice that the new model of the Ninja 250R actually looks like a real bike. The older model looked more like a toy than a real motorcycle.

I hope you're still a wee lad!

Learn to ride fast on a slow bike. It's how it should be done everywhere.

Congratulations!
Now head over to the Motorcycle forum, where you can bask in the praise of the curmudgeons (also known as experienced riders, myself included) who will tell you that you purchased one of the best starter bikes on the planet.
One word of advice, though -- sign up for that MSF course NOW.

First bike I ever bought was a Ninja ZX-5. The 250 ought to be more than adequate for the city and some highway trips. I'll envy the MPG you get with it.

Do you first purchase immediately and don't feel too good about your cheap mesh jacket. I had one of the early Joe Rocket summer mesh jackets and the thing melted on me when I went down going only about 45 mph. Not much protection, especially if it isn't reinforced like many of them.
On the other hand, my Vanson jacket has saved my skin twice from two higher speed off's and looks almost brand new.

this is your first bike? be very careful. the last guy I know that bought a sport bike for his first bike is the first guy I know to have totalled a Ducati that was less than a month old. I hope all goes well for you and your new ride.

Nice, I recently sold a KTM 625 supermoto that I had for awhile. It was alot of fun but not ideal for just cruising around town. That should be alot of fun, enjoy it man!

Nice choice for a first bike. Mine was a seven years old GS500 but a new EX250 should have better fueling for that early clutch work. The MSF course isn't bad. You'll have a leg up on some there but the patterns are good. You're probably going to want to upgrade sooner than you thought but resist for at least a year or two or around 10,000 miles.

Re: FV-QR (Zyoid)

Nice bike--i'd never pay $4500 for a 250, but I guess if you are dead set on the styling of these new ones vs. the older style which you could pick up for <$3k

Re: FV-QR (Zyoid)

this bike has been recommended in the motorcycle forum as a great first bike.
op: how much do you weigh?
i'm just concerned that if i buy something like this next spring (although older, used, & half the price) that it might be underpowered to haul my fat ass around.

I have a thing for small displacement sport bikes. Not many available anymore. This is the oneI would get if I was going to get a bike. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

This is actually THE choice for a first bike, I can't think of anything better, maybe the new Honda CRF supermoto, but that's about it.
Fantastic choice man, enjoy it, I'm sure you will!

I was hinting at " maybe you should get a beater bike and learn to ride on that" kind of thing. I have a number of friends who never had bikes before, go out and buy a sport bike for their first bike. well, the majority of them have crashed them, laid them down, etc. a couple of the guys totalled bikes and seriously injured themselves. I wasn't implying he made a bad decision, just that I hate to see somebody wreck a brand new bike due to inexperience. I wish him all of the best luck though http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Good to see there's still some rational bike newbies around who don't think they need a GSXR1K as their first bike.

Great looking bike! Congrats! I am still working on my wife to convince her that both of us signing for a bike license is a good idea. Now that we're planning for a second kid though, it's not going to happen.
I'd never have enough guts to buy a flared model though, because I know, I'd drop it.
