Brake Dust

807 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Penguin
Some time in the past, there was some talk about brake dust. I have a 2001 Jetta, 4500 miles. The rear wheel dust is unbelievable, as compared to the front. When I asked the dealer, he said "some cars are on the front, the others on the rear" not to worry. Every car I've had, the fronts are far worse. I e-mailed VW customer service with the same question, their answer, was to ask the dealer.(great help) My question, is why there is no discussion of ceramic brakes? On the Prowler forum, thats all these guys talk about for their cars.(but only on the fronts) The back rotors are supose to be of some type of alloy that ceramic would eat up. Would appreciate any help!

Re: Brake Dust (D Wilson)

Apparently VW faced enough complaints about brake dust that they went to low dust pads as OE equipment. Unfortunately, they only did this on the front. In addition, MK4s (at least I read about a few GTIs) have been known to eat rear brake pads.
As for the ceramic option...the only thing to go ceramic is the rotors. I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say the rear alloys would eat ceramics. Of course, the only road car I know of with ceramic brakes its the 996 GT2...and thats at a cost of something like 10K/corner! There was some discussion in the past here, look it up.

Sorry! What I was referring to, Prowlers have some type of alloy rotors on the rear wheels. They claim, that if you put ceramic pads on the rears, that they will eat up the alloy rotors. So, they all replace the front pads with ceramic to eliminate the dust. There is next to no dust on the rear wheels, so there are not a problem. That led to my question of being able to put ceramic pads on all four rotors on a VW. Why VW would not just use the same pad composition all around? I think Raybestos makes a ceramic pad for VW's! Maybe enough complaints will go to the company bout the rears and they will make a change. My rears look like I just rotated the wheels after 20,000 miles. Thnaks for your reponses though.

If you're just looking for dust elimination kevlar is the way to go. It's abrasion resistance is simply unparalled, so they should last a long time too. I believe the EBC Greenstuff are and aramid (kevlar) compound.
