I was hoping someone could give me a ballpark as to what a brake job would cost for a '98 Passat. I would guess new pads and new rotors. Also how often should the calipers be replaced, if ever, and what would be an average price for that.
Reason I'm asking is that my rear brakes sound really bad and I got two quotes, one from a VW dealer, for $1000 and $1400. That seems awfully high.

Re: Brake Job on Passat (jjomalleyjr)

i asked the same question here and got no answer. i spent 450 on front brakes included pads and rotors and labor at my local dealer. was told rotors could not be turned so i had to replace them as well. go to apr.com they have brake sets much cheaper and better.

$1000/$1400 just to replace the rear rotors and pads
?!
There must be more involved...my VW dealer quoted me around $500 CAD to do the rear and about the same for the fronts.
However, you'll get a much better deal if you go aftermarket. I think I've seen a couple people recommend http://www.germanautoparts.com but you could also try http://www.parts4vws.com because they have a good reputation.
I got my front cross-drilled rotors and pads from http://www.rpi-equipped for $350 CAD and then paid a shop 1 hour labour ($60) to install them. That works out to about $256 USD.

Re: Brake Job on Passat (Stargazer)

I was told $600 to $650 to change the front pads and rotors. It seemed high to me but this place is the home of the $150 "it's just a oil change".
From the price's here now I'm even for confused.

I set up a group buy on brake stuff. Go to http://www.importcarlovers.com and click on More Specials. Pads will cost you ~$75 for Mintex Red Box, and rotors start at like $30/ea.
The installation is a piece of cake, it takes me just under two hours to do the entire car.

We went to a local shop and had vented rotors installed all around with new calipers, pads, and Neuspeed brake lines on a 99 Passat GLX for $870.00.
Since you are in Chicago, maybe someone from your town knows of a good VW/Audi/Porsche tuning shop that can do the work. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Get the parts aftermarket. ClubB5 is always organizing group buys for pads and rotors. I got Mintex Red box pads and Zimmerman cross drilled rotors. Then I got my friend's shop to install them. I think the total cost for parts and labor was around $400-500.

Ditto the DIY's. I bought OEM rotors through Potterman's on Clubb5 and Mintex pads. MUCH less dust, total parts cost was just about $200 and fronts changed in about 1.5 hours. Haven't done the rears yet - they are wearing so slowly!

Re: Brake Job on Passat (PJBeirne)

Go to germansutoparts.com and buy the parts there, then install them yourself, or have a local shop do it, brakes are pretty standard and even the speedy muffler guys couldnt possibly screw it up.
I just ordered all my parts from them, you can get new stock rotors, pads and fluid for $250. I opted for the Zimmerman drilled rotors, mintex pads and super blue fluid which cost me $350. Then $100 for installation.
I got a brake set up far better than stock for 1/3 of what the stock parts would cost me at the dealer! Now I all i need to do is brake them in!

Re: Brake Job on Passat (CT-passat)

I bought the parts and did it myself. But if you don't have the time (or space) to DIY, try an independent garage.

I'm at 40k on my '99 Passat and I'm about to get the front brake pads and rotors replaced. I'm buying the Mintex Red Box pads and stock rotors at German Autoparts and having a non-dealer VW specialist do the install. Total cost will be about $260. Seems a better deal than letting the VW dealer do the job. And looking forward to less dust.

Ditto to CT-passat.
I bought the pads and rotors for ~$240 plus 2 hours of my mechanics [email protected] $40 per hour--$80 total.
Entire job $320 or so. Dealer wanted $1000.
