as most of you might be aware, i built a new motor and tranny over the last month and a half. the tranny now has redline MTL gear oil, engine has assembly lube on everything, and no oil yet.
i will be getting it running this weekend, and want to "break" it in properly (so it lasts).
any thoughts? not forged pistons BTW.
i am thinking about 8-10° timing as well.

Re: breaking in a fresh rebuild? (rockin16v)

There is another post around here about that right now. The issue is getting the rings to seat properly. Some people believe that synthetic oil will not allow this to happen, so you should run dino at first. I'm an old school guy that thinks you should run non-detergent dino (if you can find it). Either way, take it easy. Keep the revs down. I think the original owner's manual in my car said to keep the revs under 4200 for the first six hundred miles. Sounds about right. Whatever you do, check the oil often and don't be surprised if it uses some oil until the rings seat.

I've heard you should hit the highway for a nice 300 mile trip or so... keep the revs around 3-4k... then once you get to around 800 miles, use more revs to help seat things up... after 1k miles... let her loose!
GL and be gentle... it's her first time.

my neigbour from the old coutry used to work in the wolksburg plant and he told me that what they would do b4 they actually drove the car would let it idle for several hours (8 - 12 hrs ) ...

Castrol 20w-50.
No steady high RPM's, if possible, try not to go above 4000 for 500 miles. You didn't hear this from me but a VW dealer that I know of that has ring seating problems uses Comet, that bathrom cleaner stuff, to help seat the rings. I didn't believe it at first, then I saw it with my own eyes as my bud poured it in. Drove to HB and back, went to lunch, a quick shot on the freeway and changed the oil. Done.

sand also is an excellent additive to you oil.
i am going to keep her below 4G for 1000kms, then change the oil. forget about the comet crap, i am sticking to clean 10w30, and OEM filters. thanks guys!

Re: breaking in a fresh rebuild? (rockin16v)

Go out and drive the living piss out of it. Just avoid going over redline and keeping the same speed/rpms for an extended period of time.
I've broken in multiple motors like this and ended up with very strong motors that didn't use a drop of oil.
BTW, this is Shine Racing's preferred break in method...

Re: breaking in a fresh rebuild? (DocWyte)

<snip>
There is a lot of controversey on break-in procedures.

The way I broke in the TT motor was:
Use conventional 30W, or 10W30 oil. (I used 30W)
Keep under 5K for the 1st 500 mi, and don't lug the motor.
Vary the RPM's, do not sustain a constant RPM.
Change oil and filter at 500mi.
Keep under 6K from 500-1000mi and run the oil above continuing to vary the RPM's.
Change oil and filter at 1000mi.
After 1000mi, run the oil above but run it hard, or the way you will drive it when it is broken in.
Bounce it off the rev-limiter, abuse it.

Change the oil and filter with the above oil at 1500mi.
Now drive it the way you will always drive it.
Change the oil and filter at 3000mi. with synthetic (if you plan to run synthetic)
It is now broken in.

This is what I decided on after talking to a dozen different "experts".
Worked for me.
</snip>
this is what i did...

Re: breaking in a fresh rebuild? (rocco2nr)

What is the longest you guys have heard of rings taking to seat? I'm still using oil, and I probably have over 4k miles on my motor. I'm beginning to think the guy who rebuilt the motor may have pushed it too hard in the first 1k, causing the oil consumption.
