BSOD media contains no software release

My battery died on my 2016 GTI yesterday. After replacing it, my head unit started acting up.
on a cold start, the display works and I can do everything fine. After a couple minutes of driving, the head unit turns black and everything goes off. A short while later, a blue screen of death shows up and it says EMERGENCY UPDATE along with a message about no media being present.

hot restart, the error persists. If it turn off the display with a BSOD,it goes off and when I turn it back on the BSOD shows with a message saying it is detecting for some time. Eventually it stops detecting and throws another Message about no media being present for 60 seconds or something.

since it works on a cold start (albeit temporarily), it seems like everything should be fine. Not sure what the best course of action is. If I have to get something replaced id like to know so I don’t have to pay for diagnostics. If it is something easy, id definitely try to do it myself as I’ve recently replace a blend motor for the AC by myself.

thanks for any assistance

@Francesco01 The whole infotainment system "brain" had to be replaced by a dealer (required programming) and cost over a $1,000. The screen was fine, so that saved a little money, but all of the guts (aka the "brain") are in the glovebox.

Apparently, these units have problems with the memory going bad, like total failure. I tried having them re-flash the memory, but it didn't work at all.

It is really odd that it happens after a battery replacement, but it sounds like the battery failing causes an electrical blip that results in the memory being damaged.

Just wanted to share my personal experience resolving this issue in case anybody who finds this post via Google is looking for a solution that does NOT involve replacing the hardware / head unit.

Here’s how the situation played out:
  • My car battery was toast; asked my neighbour for a boost
  • His compact jump-starter did not work, I suspect this caused the infotainment system issue
  • Once he used his car to give me a jump instead, my car boosted successfully
  • After 5 mins of driving, the infotainment system crashed and up came the EMERGENCY UPDATE blue screen
  • Replaced my battery the following day; the infotainment system worked normal for 5 mins, then crashed + blue screen
  • Did a hard reset on the infotainment system (i.e. pressing down the power knob for 10 secs); once again, worked like normal for 5 mins before inevitably crashing + blue screen
At this point, I started scouring the Internet for solutions. I found a website that had several firmware updates available for download, but unfortunately, for my specific firmware version (MST2_US_VW_P0504D), no such update exists. I called my local VW dealership just to get a feel for what the worst case scenario would look like for me: they said replacing the head unit alone would cost me $2k after taxes, and that’s before charging labour and a diagnostic fee...

That was enough motivation for me to keep trying to find a solution, and ultimately, I did. All the instructions for this patch are located here and easy to follow. This is also a helpful link that will cater instructions and tips specifically to your firmware and head unit. My head unit was manufactured by Delphi, but other VWs have Technisat / Preh head units.

If anybody needs additional help with this, I’ll do my best to guide you personally. Major shout out to the VW car enthusiasts around the world who have created such a helpful community online, it is thanks to them that this solution is possible, and why I feel obligated to pay it forward and help save the next person who experiences this issue from getting scammed by the dealership.
