Budget Pairings... the $20k, 2-car garage
I spend a lot of time purusing the used car sites, especially eBaymotors.com. I've decided that I can put together an infinate number of 2 car combinations without spending more then $20k. Bearing in mind that I will have a child eventually, and that I live in wintery Vermont...
----1. '97 P71 Crown Vic ± $5k
----2. '80 Jeep CJ (Restored & tweaked) ± $15k
----1. '90 MB 300E ± $12k
----2. '70's ex-MOD SIII Land Rover 109 (refurbished) ± $8k
----1. '92 Volvo 240GL Wagon (stick, mint) ± $5k
----2. '97 Chevy 1500 Pickup (X-Cab, 4x4) ± $15k
----1. '89 FJ-62 Land Cruiser (mint) ± $12k
----2. '89 Honda CRX Si (unmolested & clean) ± $5k
----1. '86 Porsche 944 Turbo ± $8k
----2. '93 Lexus LS400 ± $12k
----1. '70's Land Rover SIII-88 (refurbished) ± $8k
----2. '90 MkII VW GTi 16v (mint) ± $8k
----1. '76 BMW 2002 (mint) ± $8k
----2. '93 Ford Taurus SHO ± $8k
----1. '96 Ford Bronco ± $8k
----2. '93 Lexus LS400 ± $12k
I think I could go on forever.
Fantasy shopping is TOO entertaining.
What combos would fit you?

Interesting...
I think I would go with:
Audi S4 (the original of course): $13k
Lotus Seven Replica: $7k (I am planning to build one anyways, and thats even a bit over budget!)
Now stop daydreaming and get to work!

I think you would have to be absolutely insane to pay $15k for a '92 K1500. A friend of mine recently picked up a loaded '98 extended cab (automatic, 350, Z71, leather power seats, etc, etc) with <60k miles on it for <$22k CDN. It was owned by an old guy and was in MINT shape. Very very nice truck. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
I think all of my combinations would include a truck and a sporty car.
1. '90 Nissan 240SX with SR20DET swap and other goodies ($8k)
2. '97 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 five-speed ($12k)
1. '87 Toyota Corolla GT-S with aftermarket goodies ($6k)
2. '97 Jeep Cherokee Sport with lift kit and 32" tires ($14k)
1. '89 Porsche 944 Turbo ($12k)
2. '93 Toyota 4Runner ($8k)
1. '87 Porsche 944S ($7k)
2. '96 Chevrolet K1500 Z71 ($13k)
1. '95 Nissan 240SX with SR20DET swap ($15k)
2. '92 Jeep Cherokee Sport ($5k)

1973 Triumph TR6 in very good condition-$7,000
1998 Nissan Maxima SE- $11,000
$2000 to "fix" the suspension on the Max, and a set of Webers for the Triumph.

If all you have is $20K for the cars, you better pick something more reliable. Your repair and maintenance bills for any of these two cars when used as drivers will be over $5k a year each.

interesting... because i spend a hell of a lot less than that for the 924 AND 944 put together. ask me how i know.

Re: Budget Pairings... the $20k, 2-car garage (Sporin)

take a light truck and a car from this list...any combination would make me happy:
Trucks:
-1999/2000 jeep cherokee sport [11k]
-1996 jeep cherokee sport [$6.5k]
-1987ish toyota 4x4 truck [$3.5k]
-1990 toyota 4-runner [$6k]
Cars:
-1995 Nissan Maxima V6 [$15k]
-1990-1992 GTI/GLI 16v [$4.5k]
-1990/91 RX7 Turbo II [$5k]
-1997 Jetta GLX [$11k]
-1995 Miata w/ a turbo kit and cage, full suspension....[$13k]
-1996 200sz SE-R w/ JDM engine swap [$14k]
-any year porsche 951
-A1 GTI [$1.5k]
Most likely I'd like the '99 cherokee sport in white with the 4.ol and a good condition 91 white jetta gli with some mods.

I'm sure you do know.
However, for arguement sake, one year I had my radiator go out (Can't weld a radiator in a 928) needed 4 new tires, had my clutch replaced and had to buy a new AC compressor. These were pretty much normal cost on a car that was 10 years old.
Want to guess what I spent that year?
And while I may be a newbie here, I have over 4,000 post over at the Corvette Forum and several hundred as about half a dozen other forums. I'd post over here more but my only VW is my wife's beetle - a car that I'm not to happy with.

well, the amount i spend on the Porsches has a lot to do with the fact that i do my own work. i also only bring them someplace only if that place has a tool, or access to a part, that would cost more than the labor to just have the thing repaired. i have friends with daily driver 924s, 924Ss, 944s, 944S2s, and even 944 turbos. these cars see snow, rain, salty roads, slush, ice, and they're still in great shape. one thing i happened to notice... the people that drive these 50/50 weight balance rear wheel drive Porsches all year round are also some damn good drivers. they all either race, autocross, or do DE events during the year.
where I am, the labor for fixing a Porsche is not expensive... between $35 and $50 an hour. not to mention people don't rip you off around here. a friend needed a new radiator for his 1984 944. the place that fixed it (which does all the Porsches, Jaguars, etc around here) charged him $300, and that included a NEW radiator.
owning a 924 or 944 doesn't need to sink you. if you do your research and you aren't afraid to pop the hood, they won't set you back as much money as a lot of other cars do. good example: a friend with a 928 had his alternator blow out one day before a track event. if you look in the catalogs, or get a quote from the dealer... that's around $600 in some parts of this country... if not more. he took it to his mechanic; who in turn sent it to get rebuilt; and then for $175 later (parts and labor) his 928 had an alternator that looked, ran, and charged just like new. i paid $330 for my Scirocco 16V alternator parts and labor. he paid about half that for a 928.
so it depends on where you are and how much you do on your own. i'd NEVER be able to afford these cars if i lived in california or Florida. i've heard many stories about what they charge you for a simple tune-up over there.

Re: Budget Pairings... the $20k, 2-car garage (loopsnew)

Ah, I'm already halfway there:
1) 2000 VW Passat wagon, peeling trim, rattles, 45k = $15,000
2) 1994 Miata = $5000
As you mentioned, there are infinite variations on this theme...but sadly I've been thinking about the $50k 2-car garage (mmmmm, 01 V70 2.4t and 00 323i touring....) Must..pay...for..grad..school..resist..car..urges....
