“Driving the Bolide is like riding a cannonball,” says Bugatti. And with a top speed of more than 311 mph, that seems like a fair comparison.

That speed is achieved thanks to Bugatti’s familiar 8.0-liter W16 engine, which has been tuned to its highest power level yet. Making 1,850 metric horsepower (1,824 American horses) at 7,000 RPM and 1,365 lb-ft of torque from 2,000-7,025 RPM, acceleration will no doubt feel like leaving a cannon.

Indeed, it gets to 62 mph in just 2.17 seconds, on to 124 mph in just 4.3 seconds, up to 186 mph in just 7.3 seconds, onto 248 mph in just 12 seconds, and finally to 311 mph in just 20.1 seconds.

So, to recap, by the time an Aston Martin V12 Vantage S gets to 60 mph, the Bugatti is already doubling its speed. By the time a 2019 Audi Q3 Prestige S Line Quattro gets to 60 mph, the Bolide is tripling its speed. And by the time an Up! Is at highway speed, the Bugatti is going 248 mph. By the time a 1977 AMC Gremlin gets to 60 mph the Bugatti has broken 300 mph and is in a different state. 

The 0-60 time is impressive, but it doesn’t tell the full story.

Helping the power along is the crash diet the Bolide has gone on. Tipping the scales at just 1,240 kg (dry) the Bolide is a full 700 kg lighter than the Chiron. That’s a full Lotus Elan that Bugatti has managed to remove and it means that the Bolide has a weight-to-power ratio of just 0.67 KG/PS.

At 4,700 mm long, it’s a bit shorter than a short-wheelbase Euro Tiguan though it’s as wide as an Atlas at 1,998 mm. Perhaps most impressively, though, it’s just 3.2 feet tall. 

It sticks to the ground thanks to double wishbones front and rear. The fronts have standing springs, while the rear uses a very racy lying spring, so don’t trust anything it says. Stopping power is furnished by 6-piston calipers 380 mm discs, just like on a 911 GT3 RS, which weighs about 200 kg more, so they should be pretty handy.

Indeed, Bugatti says they’ll bring you to a stop from 400 km/h (248 mph) in just 24 seconds. To keep everything light, though, the calipers weigh just 2.4 kg (5.2 lbs), and the wheels are made of forged magnesium by OZ and weigh just 7.4 kg (16.3 lbs) in the front and 8.4 (18.5 lbs) in the rear. They’re wrapped in racing slicks provided by Michelin.

The company also says that the Bolide will be capable of generating 2.8G through the corners. 

Power is funneled to all four wheels via a 7-speed DSG transmission.

As you’d expect by looking at it, airflow has been considered here and at 320 km/h (200 mph) it generates 2,600 kg of downforce. There are active aero elements that will allow it to slip through the air if top speed is what you’re looking for, but perhaps the most impressive trick is the morphable skin on the roof scoop. At low speeds, the scoop is smooth, but at higher speeds, it turns golf ball-shaped, which reduces drag by 10% and reduces lift by 17%. 

No price has been revealed for the Bolide yet, but we imagine this will be an expensive cannonball.
