im looking for a beetle to turn into a baja bug. i found one for 500$ and it looks like a pretty good deal. the only thing im wondering about is that they put in a bus engine in awhile back. it runs and all, but i was wondering if was common or even a good idea. any info and advice would be appreciated.

If it's still the same upright engine it's the same. Later vans had a type 4 engine that is stronger, more reliable, and had a real oil filter. Personal preference, good or bad.

I put a type 4 on my 67 and had almost no problems. It's nice to have a little more power. Plus you can really have your oil filtered, instead of going through a little screen. I got about 28mpg during the summer and about 11 during the winter, because my electric choke didn't work. The clutch is the only thing you might have to worry about. I broke a throughout bearing, but that was all.
