Bypassing the EGR

Lately my 2.8 12v V6 (AAH) has come into some vaccum leak related trouble. While I was down there looking at all the hoses, the idea crossed my mind about bypassing the EGR. Does anybody know if this has been done before in an Audi?
What would the emissions consequences be?
