CA & Northeast emissions, $100 for what?

Does anyone know EXACTLY what the emissions equipment differences are for the CA and Northeast area vehicles? Or is it simply a money grab?

Re: CA & Northeast emissions, $100 for what? (concours)

About three weeks ago when I purchased my Golf, I insisted they remove the emissions "option" from the purchase price, and they did so with essentially no resistance. They said it was required for CA cars, I asked why the new Subaru right there did not have the same charge, then the usual "I gotta clear it with the manager" ploy. Without any authoritative information, I opine the emissions option is only a con similar to a "floor fee" or "city advertising fee" etc. It would be interesting if VWOA would go on record to justify the charge.

The fee is for an extended warranty on emissions equipment that California requires.
Meaning CA requires that a lot of components be covered beyond the B2B period. But the warranty only applies if the car is registered in CA and is being repaired there.
You may also notice that the manual has a CA section in the emissions warranty section.
The reason you may find CA cars in surrounding states is because dealers in the surrounding states are allowed to order CA cars to satify their demand for supplying cars to CA residents, or the car just happens to satisfy the dealer's color and equipment selection.

so basically the warranty on those parts went titsup? or does it only apply if you are in Ca?

This $100 "Emissions" Fee is simply a way for VW to make more money, given that the general public will accept this marketing ploy, which really is free advertising for VWoA, reminding potential customers that VW has a modern diesel engine in the U.S. which meets CA, MA, and other Northeastern States' touch emissions critera.

No Steve, the money is for the extra warranty period on stuff. Read the owner's manual particularly the emissions warranty for California.
CA cars get turbochargers warranted for 70K/7Yrs for example.

I don't believe so because most TDI's sold in the North America do not go to CA / NY / MA where emission rules are more strict, unless VW is having a person buying a TDI in Wyoming pay for the emissions of someone living in CA.
This is a marketing gymic or a way for VW to make more money.

What don't you beleive, that California has mandated longer warranties for many parts for new cars registered in California?
It's true. It's in writing.
As far as the charge, I dunno. If I were in Wyoming I'd balk at paying it, unless I were planning to register as a new car in California.

Nuke:
The longer CA warranty is in my Owner's Manual too. I'm not disputing your good point!!! regarding this issue, just that I sense there are additional ulterior motives at work, as evidenced by every TDI sold in the U.S. slapped with a non-negotiable $100 Emissions Fee - thats all.
Customers buying a TDI in their home state that has zero emission standards for diesel engines also pay this $100 fee, which might seem like an unfair tax for them to pay when no laws mandate such requirements.
Also, as far as I know, TDI's shipped to CA / MA / NY have zero differences in emission equipment than one destined to a state with no diesel emission laws.
I suspect that VWoA has just smartly decided to cover the turbo and etc... for longer periods of time in your state due to CA's more stringent state laws also covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty Act.

...but every TDI sold in the U.S. is not slapped with this $100 fee--or at least if they are, it isn't on the sticker. I just bought one, a 2002 Jetta, and there was no such fee listed. The car is still CA emissions compliant, according to the under-hood sticker, but it presumably wouldn't carry the longer warranty.

The emissions fee is NOT applied to TDIs sold in every state. The emissions fee is for the following states: NH, NY, MA, CT, RI, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, VT and DC. I have a TDI and I did not pay the $100 emissions fee as I do not live in one of the above states.

The extended warranty periods on the emissions related components (including turbos and other stuff) in California are not optional, they are statutory.
I was just in Texas and happened to see a sticker on a new TDI and there was no $100 emissions charge on it.
