Cadillac Announces ESCALADE IQ: The First All-Electric Escalade

Lemme guess; this thing is going to weigh 10,000 pounds :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

The Cadillac ESCALADE IQ will be revealed later this year and promises the same commitment to craftsmanship, technology and performance that has helped the Escalade nameplate dominate the large luxury SUV segment for the last 20 years. The ESCALADE IQ will join the LYRIQ and the upcoming CELESTIQ as Cadillac continues to build an all-electric portfolio.

The IQ naming strategy celebrates Cadillac introducing a different type of EV to the market — one that works in tandem with people’s daily lives and environments. The IQ designation is Cadillac’s EV nomenclature and first debuted on the LYRIQ.

You know, I don't want to be one of those people that say a BS in Marketing is a nothing degree but vapid copy like this does not help the cause.

I'm halfway surprised they haven't already rolled this out in some extremely limited fashion. Take the Hummer EV underpinnings, put the Escalade body on it, price it at $199k and sell it in limited amounts to the "influencers".

The Hummer EV weighs 9,000. So yea, I can see 10k. Does anyone care tho? Yea its terrible for everyone else they hit in a crash, the roads, tires, efficiency. But does anyone really care? No one is lobbying for lighter-weight vehicles other than gray-haired Lotus enthusiasts. Buyers def don't care and prob even like the idea.

Missed opportunity to have "E" after each model instead of IQ. Then they could have had E-V's. badumtss
No one outside of GM knows anything about it officially, but it's rather more likely to be closer to an SUV version of Silverado EV than of Hummer. Both are BT1XX vehicles, but Silverado is narrower and the aerodynamics are better. 'Course, we don't yet know how much it's going to weigh, and "a lot" is sure to be a fair statement, but I'm thinking lighter than Hummer.

My guess is 8000 - 8500 lbs with the bigger (212kWh same as Hummer) battery, and possibly 6500 - 7500 lbs with a smaller option that's comparable to what the Ford Lightning offers.

People buying vehicles in this segment don't care what they weigh.

At least in my province, there is an upper limit to GVWR before a vehicle has to be registered as a commercial vehicle, and you really don't want to deal with that unless necessary.

For me, the little bit of leather added to the column shifter really enhanced the craftsmanship and appeal of the C/K 1500 dashboard

I dont think buyers think about the weight, never crosses their minds. What is going to start happening. People will go to a show and cant park in the parking deck because their SUV weighs 10k and the deck already reached the weight limit on first floor parking with EVs. We already had this issue at my work office deck. They placed a charger on a top floor and a set of engineers said either move them or limit how many EV cars are up there.

I can see the Karen-rage intensifying and cell phone video footage of the meltdowns now :ROFLMAO:

Yeah but check out that crotch vent.

I remember my dad picking up a brand new K1500 Silverado and then this came out for $50k more with the same interior... but with leather.

And right on cue, spy photos with the vehicle rocking 24-inch rollers:

Speaking of parking deck weight limit, this happened a few minutes down the road from me.

They pulled a fully laden concrete truck onto the deck when the should've had a pump truck for conveyance on a deck. 🤷

I would have preferred "EscaLIQ" or "EscalaDIQ"

The GMT400 Escalade was a thrown together knee jerk reaction to the success of the Navigator. I'm convinced Ford is still pissed that GM just straight up copied their homework and then went on to crush the category.

I have a B.S. in Marketing!
:p

It does cause me to be critical of bad marketing coming from corporations because I always think I could have done better.

I agree, especially since Ford seemed to put a solid amount of investment in the 2nd-gen Navigator.
Billy Joel needs to re-record Anthony’s Song, to change the line about Cadillac to “Cadillac-IQ-IQ-IQ”
I’m assuming this will have 3 rows of seats vs just 2 in the Hummer? I’ll also assume we’ll see Chevy and GMC versions eventually?

You can bet your bottom dollar that GM is going to want to recoup their development costs on BT1XX, and just as with the combustion-engine vehicle, they'll do that by building as many variations as they can sell.
Massive battery packs and inherent problems:

The guys are astonished at the amount of manufacturing processes that go into making the Hummer EV's battery pack, noting that the main housing consists of 139 independent stamped components that are then laser projection welded together and spot welded together.

That's "quite a high component count," as they mildly put it, and it leads to the Hummer EV's battery pack requiring some 3,500 welds – almost double the amount of welds on a regular EV pack.

As they dissect the battery pack further, they find that GM has spent more money than it should have on other components and processes – such as the overly complicated cell separators.

An interesting thing about the battery is that it consists of two 400-volt battery packs packaged in parallel – one on top of the other – each with 12 battery modules. Obviously, the video goes into more detail, so it's clearly an interesting watch if you're into battery stuff or simply want to know what's inside an EV battery and why.

The video's conclusion is General Motors built a battery pack that's not only too heavy, it's also too complex – and therefore probably expensive – to produce.

Maybe that Hummer battery is overbuilt due to requirements for surviving off road?
