For oval racing, you probably want to go in the 280+ degree duration range.
Re: Cam recommendation needed!! (gearhead455)

Is it a solid slifter head? and how much head work is done and how much compression? The 280 is good if the head will breathe enough to make use of it. You need big compression, do you use race gas? Need like 11.5:1 then the Schrick would come alive with good porting, also 5 angle grind on the seats will help flow a huge amount.

Re: Cam recommendation needed!! (A1Rocco)

Thanks for your reply A1Rocco!! Currently, the head is a hydro one, with no P&P work, but it has been shaved .030" The motor will be a hybrid '88 Audi 80 block, with my 85 GTi head.I est. the compression is right now w/the head on the HT block; 10.7:1.I don't know what CR the Audi motor has.I have occiasionaaly used race gas,but I dont think I need it;Sunoco 94 should be fine. So, what cam do you think would be best?? Thanks again! Ken R.

Ken, I've sent you an e-mail regarding this, have a look. I didn't realise that you would be using a hydro head. The 3A and hydro head combo will be 10.5:1 comp. and with .030" off the head you should be around 11:1 comp. A .080" shave should give about 1.35 comp. pts. If you are using the knock sensor ignition you should be fine with the 94 octane. If you are not then I would try to run some octane boost, actually even with the KS you should so the KS won't be retarding your timing all the time.
The 280 is usable on the street and many have but it is considered the biggest for the street. It has a rough idle but it is also a solid lifter cam so it's not for you. You need a hydro cam that will give a hp peak around 6500rpm and very good torque numbers.

WOW!! Thanks for the tips!! Ok I have more details for you to consider,so you can give me a better recommendation.Head will be shaved .040",dual outlet exh. manifold & d/p,using 3A block. My rpm's before I hit the corner are 5500,that's with stock size tires. The head has no porting or polishing work done. Will use perf. valve springs. So, now what do you think?? Ken, did you check the list of cam specs on the site I have listed in the other cam/head threads. The url is joserotger.hypermart.net/Camshaft.htm.
