I would still check the timing first before spending money on something stupid like a sensor or tensioner...If you do need a good cam chain tensioner I have one I can sell you fairly cheap.

I know you said 10k miles ago but the timing belt tensioners are known to fail rather fast so I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the issue.
