Can I just get a boost controller to up the boost instead of getting a chip?

I thought since the car is a turbo from the factory instead of chipping it I can just up the boost to a nice rance. Wouldn't it be cheaper and safer since I can run low boost on everyday driving and raise it when I feel like driving hard?
PS- Does the '02 GTI come standard with the 3 spoke steering wheel or do you need to get the leather package to get it?

You can do that but I recommend Chipping it. Only because that way you are definante(spelling) that your a/f mixture has been compensated and anything will be compensated for the boost. And Yes you need the leather package to get the three spoke wheel.

Split Second makes a manual boost controller for the 1.8t. I haven't bothered to read the threads, use the search to find more info. FYI, you can't go higher then 1 bar of boost (14.5psi) with the Split Second. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Welcome to the Vortex. Always good to see another New Yawka in the house. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Stick with a chip in the beginning....It's easier, and gets you more power. When you get to know your motor a bit more, a boost controller is an option......

im planning on getting a t3 turbo sould i wait till i upgrade and then chip it because wont i need a new one any waY?
