Can you paint the chome side strips on the passat and still look good?

I was thinking about getting a black passat. but those chome strips I do not care for. Do you think it would be much of an expense to have the dealer paint those crome strips black? Will they be prone to chipping and not look too good after awhile? Has anyone done anything like this?
