I have an '89 Jetta GL, 5speed with 205,000miles on it. I have this oil leak and I can't figure out where it's coming from. There's a noticeable drip coming from nut you remove to drain the oilpan. I tightened it and it's still there. I also tightened the bolts around the oilpan housing and that cut some of it down. With this much mileage and mostly original, what could I look more closely at?

The cam cover gasket leaks down the back of the engine, the sump gasket, and the washer on the drain bolt. Look for the highest point that's got oil.

I had a valve cover leak, replaced that and still had a leak, just not as bad. Turns out the oil pressure sending unit was leaking through the plastic where the connector comes out. Look at your oil pressure sending unit also.

It has been my experience that oil leaks can be very tricky to track down...So.
Start with a verty thorough cleaning of the engine, top to bottom. The cleaner you get the engine, the easier it will be to track down the leak.
I usually spray the works liberally with a product called Big Orange, drive to the coin-operated car wash and hose it down. If your engine is grime pit then one application may not get the job done.
You might also use Simple Green, or any of the engine cleaner foam in a can products at the local Pep-Boys.
Remember to cover sensitive parts of the engine...
Good luck,
fat biker
