Okay, I've never done auto-x before, but I'm thinking about trying it this spring. I'm looking for the modification rules for the different car classes - the SCCA website doesn't have them up. My car's stock right now, but I'm curious which mods I can do and which might bump me into a different class...

Re: car classes? (Eric16v)

Thanks! that helps...
As a more general question, what's the competition like in the different classes? Should I try to stay in the stock class for now, or just mod away and enter a higher class? Having never done auto-x before, I'm not expecting to win anything in whatever class I'm in, but I just don't want to feel silly in a class that's over my head. Any input is appreciated...

I'd say stock would be good
When you're starting out, it's probably better to have the same car every time you auto-x instead of changing things around.
Then, after you've been to a bunch of events, you'll get a flavor for what's going on with the different classes, and if you want to modify your car or not.

what class were you thinking about running, maybe we can tell you more about it? GS? around here last year, the integra type-r's dominated GS, but this year they've been moved to a different class...
most people who aren't building up a dedicated auto-x car run in stock or street touring... but watch out -- if you get a chip on that 1.8t, you'll go into street mod -- where there are some scary fast cars...

Yeah, it's too bad I can't chip it and stay in street touring, when the 2002s basically come chipped from the factory...
It looks like about the most I could do and stay in stock would be a wheel/tire upgrade (I could put 17's on it, right?). But springs or a rear sway bar would bump me up to ST (even if the springs were the VW lowering springs, since they were only a dealer-installed option). Can you think of other mods I might want to look into? Yes, I know I need to modify my driving skills first...

Also, anyone here from the Portland area? It wouldn't hurt to get some local info before I head off to the races...

To stay in stock, you'll have to use a stock wheel size. So as long as your year had a 17" optional wheel from the factory, you could use wheels that diameter with the same width. Offset will also have to be within a certain amount as well. Problem with stock is that you can run $$ R compound tires, and almost have to to be competitve.
I'd say read the STS rules really well and mod along those lines. It seems the best route to go with a street driven but modded car.

VW's do really well in STS. THe class allows for a lot of the bolt on mods that VW owners want to do anyway. Shocks, springs, sway bars, wheels, tires etc.
It gets foggy when you talk about chips. Basically chips for the 1.8T will bump you to SM, but if you just want to have fun and play with your car then go for it.
If you want to get trophies and bragging rights read the rules carefully and build your car accordingly. At the National level competitors look at each others cars carefully and protests are not uncommon and are not fun.
I ran a VW is STS for a couple years and now I'm in stock class. Let me tell you setting up a car for stock class is actually harder.

yeah, A3's and A4's are good in STS, but I'm getting beaten with my '92. then again, i have really really lousy tires, but still. i'm trying to beat guys with totally done integra's and civic;s. those things really do handle.

Honda's are all about suspension, heck the CRX was is AS when it first came out because it handled so well. VW's have more power, it's a trade off.
The A2 and A3 suspension is very similar, actually a lot of the parts will work on both platforms shocks, springs etc. The benefit to the A2 is weight. Less creature comfort equals light race car. If you like your suspension setup start looking at little things like bushings. If you figure your car is at least 10 years old, bushings do rot out and cause funky suspension movement and poor handling.
Keep at it and I bet the A2 will be quicker than my VR6 ie:Heavy6
