lately wheni drive my car the car hesitates and doesnt go anywhere until like 3k rpm.. and while im in gear and i floor the pedal it sputters and hesitates.. any one know what could be causing this.. thank you

car is a 90 jetta with a 1.8 8v digi 2.. car has 194k( and was running strong till now)

Has this started when the temp began dropping really low?, I always had issues with my beater, it never ran smooth. Well now that it hit -20 to -30 here in montreal my engine sputters like mad bellow 3k rpm. It will idle maybe for the first 30 seconds then it begins to idle around 400 and eventually will stall unless I keep it reving around 3k and up. I read up on this forum that this symptom can be from a broken temp sensor. I will be chaning my sensor hopefully tomorrow.

i didnt even get a chance to check it yet... its too cold outside but i wanna know everything that it can be so i dont have to keep going out todo it.. its gettin too cold out
