Re: catalityc converter how much ? (VWzealot)

I've been screaming this for years

Scroll about 1/2 way down and look for the only part number with VW in it. I have picked up three of these and have been happy with the results each time. The description has changed, but these were used on the Mid 80's Callaway projects cars, and outflow anything I have ever seen, including the TT stuff. Plus, they're $40.

Re: catalityc converter how much ? (P-Dub)

Sorry to take so long to get back to you guys.
The catalytic converter from Callaway has a three bolt flange at both ends, kind of like the test pipe for the MK1. I'm not sure if this is a direct bolt in replacement for 16V's, but it worked with my MK1 GTi when it was stock. Now that I have a 16V in there, I had to switch some things around, and I'm back to using the stock 16V cat. I wish I knew if this would fit or not, but I have only owned one car that came with a 16V from the factory, and that one has no cat now.
If you compare the two pieces; Callaway and TT side by side, you can see the difference in design. Callaway uses a fine mesh for the internals, while, if my my memory is correct, TT uses something similar to the factory design.

Cheers,
Pat

if the callaway one has a 3 flange on both sides its not going to work unless you cut the flange off one side and add straight pipe to it, or add a 3 flange to the existing exhaust. that price for the callaway and if it flows better might be worth the trouble. i personally hate working on the exhaust and try to stay away from that custom stuff.

do you know if the outer dimensions are the same, as in the length and height? i'm more concerned with whether or not it will physically fit under the car.

So, I'm thinking of ordering a TT cat-back this week. Will the Callaway bolt up to the TT setup or not? Its on a 2.0l 16v, (1990) so its a 50mm cat on there right now... right?
Anyone know?

A quick question about your flow bench. What brand is it and can you post some flow numbers? I assume you have a flow bench, or are you just assuming that the $40 cat flows better? Just curious as to how you determine that one cat was better than the other

Re: catalityc converter how much ? (GetOuttaMyWay)

no it wont "bolt right up" you would have to remove the flage , weld a pipe with a reducion in it, and figure out a way to adapt it to the down pipe flange or just buy the right cat and not worry about it

Re: catalityc converter how much ? (DrMSH)

the cat is 55mm and our stock cat is 50mm, so the callaway is larger, therefore you need some sort of reducer to make it work.
