I have a question. WIll removing the cat converter reduce power output in a Vr6? will it reduce torque? I currently have a no cat setup (giac chip, 268 cams, k&n and tt 2.5"exhaust) I dynoed at around 160 lb-ft to the wheels. (good curve max torque was over a good rpm range not just a peak) I was thinking of getting a 3" hi flo cat, should I stay without the cat.?
(i removed the cat a long time ago, i think i recall that it felt like i lost some torque but never dynoed with the cat).
ALso when i drag race my car it seems the higher i rev all gears the faster i go, time and mph in the 1/4. I hear some folks shift to third at 6800 and to fourth at 6800 but if i do that in the 1/4 mile (i have a 3.94) i loose 1mph and a tenth or two right off the bat. (did numerous tests). I got the BEST ET's and mph reving up to and slightly over 7k in all gears.
ANy insight and good info on this is appreciated.
I will post the dyno sheets and timeslips shortly.
(its a 97 jetta glx, btw)

Re: catalytic convereter.....w/wo (Anton73)

Dyno tested in 3rd gear (had stock 3.389 final at the time) oil temp at 200 deg. F and ambient temp over 90 deg. humidity: dewpoint 80deg.

1/4 mile slips w/ street tires (kumho 205-55-15's treadwear 320)

w/ nitto drag radials (205-45-15)

average time is prolly 15.0-15.1 but the day i removed the seats and used VP race fuel C12 got all passes under 15.0

Re: catalytic convereter.....w/wo (vagvr6)

well I dyno the same setup as you except my exhaust is the autotech midpipe back (2 1/4) and the stock cat. I dynoed 164TQ with an almost identical curve. Oh yeah I haven't dyno the teh GIAC chip yet which feels much stronger.

Re: catalytic convereter.....w/wo (hsd16vdub)

49000 miles..got the car new, mid 97. cloth interior glx. Well i did some testing and i replaced the open k&n i had been using with a stock box and stock paper filter. Car had a bit more torque but felt a bit restrained up top (5800-7000).. Put in a drop in k&n and it felt better up top and retaned the torque. Humm seems the vr is finiky with the intake. At the track i did a run without any filter atached and i lost milage, about .8mph (i was extremely consistent in my pases before changing the setup, all within .2 mph

Different car's have different results. I've seen a A2 Jetta VR6 lose 5hp when going from stock to cone. I've also seen a A3 VR6 gain 5hp when going to the cone filter. I'm not sure what works best. We have to do some more testing.
