CEL not working - can't pass inspection, help

616 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Matt
Hi,
I'm working on a Mk III golf GL 4door for a friend. He can't get it to pass emmissions b/c the cel won't illuminate on the dash.
Is there a bulb for this that needs to be replaced? this picture i found while doing reasearch makes it look like it would be a LED.

is there a relay somewhere that i need to replace?
please, any help with this would be most appreciated.

Get a bulb from the dealer.
ya they're just small bulbs attached little orange holders. you could even swap one of the lights you really dont use or care about much to that one just to pass inspection then swap it back or leave it or whatever until you get a replacement.

why would they check to see if your CEL was working? If they set it off, do they also pay to have it turned off? Never heard of that one before?

In Cali they check to make sure that the CEL is functioning properly. Basically when they start up the car that it briefly illuminates and goes off. If it stays on/doesn't work at all, they will not pass it

some new wa-state thing. they make you turn off car, then back on and watch to see if it blinks on then off when you start the car. if it doesn't, you fail. if the cel is on, you fail. if you pass both of those conditions, they hook up an obd2 scan tool and scan for codes. if they find certain ones, you fail.
i dont think they do a tail-pipe emmissions test anymore on obd2 cars. i think they just rely on the obd2 system telling them if your car is running right or not.
i'm guessing they dont figure on me getting my hands on a vag-com and clearning the codes before i go in there. their loss i guess.
thanks for the tip about stealing a bulb from another spot by the way... i stole the seatbelt one

too bad now i have a cel that is on all the time. guess i just need the vag-com now and then its back to the emmissions place.

man, I'm glad they don't do that here in Virginia!! We do have emissions tests with the sniffer up the tail pipe and computer. Oh well, I'm sure that will happen here soon enough

Good Luck!!

In Cali next year they are implementing dyno-testing. So, it will be sniffered along with being on the dyno causing a load on the motor..They expect about 40% of cars that now barely pass to fail...

thats pretty harsh. how strict are they about enforcing that kind of stuff? I had a friend that drove around a crx with a b16a swap that wouldn't pass emmissions for over a year and he never got a ticket. he finally went and got it to pass emmissions and got his tabs and and didn't have to pay fines or late fees or anything.... not once in a year did a cop ever say a word about him not having valid tabs or give him the huge ticket for it.

they have that here though its not really a dyno...almost looks the same. ill tell ya, its REAL hard for lowered cars to get onto those things. started rippin off my euro lip, then i took it off and scraped the bumper, even with 2x4's. guys were gonna try to pass me without goin up on it but they couldnt. thats what you need to do. find a good station to go to that lets things slide
Re: (DHill)

Down here you can give the guy $20 and hell make you pass regardless of how bad the car is.
