Can ayone recommend parts replacement to remedy the chain noise? (without replacing the entire thing)
Not sure if the bolt should be replaced with a new and imporoved bolt?
Also, should a guide be replaced as well?
The car is a 1998 Jetta VR6; 85000mi and I have located the source of the noise to the left rear upper part of the engine, (very near the bolt)

You can replace the tensioner bolt with a new one. Fairly quick diag. If you swap it out and are still making noise there's no sense in only replacing one guide / chain, etc. You can pickup an entire chain kit with guides and tensioner from germanautoparts for 160 - 180 depending on your setup (Dual Chain / Single). I personally wouldnt go through the effort to pull everything apart only to worry about the other parts that werent replaced.

Yes, however upper can be done without dropping tranny; whereas chain replacement = 20hrs work correct?

You can only replace one guide with the out taking the tranny out.

20 Hours is reasonable. The last time I did mine was about 15.
Big pain in the a** though.

Took it to a qualified engine rebuilder.
We took apart the upper half and he can't see any problem in there.
I'm not sure if he tried anything with the bolt..

Strange...
I replaced my chains and guides over the summer and still has always made a slight noise. I guess once you've had chains brake on you your always a bit paranoid.

Would anything air conditioning related have to be disconnected for this job?
The compressor will not turn on now

Shouldn't be...the chains are on the other side of the engine
