I have a set of OEM plug wires in the mail and plan on using NGK spark plugs. Just wondering how hard it is going to be to change the plugs, I am new to the VR6 and have never done it before. It just looks like the intake manifold is in the way. Please don't tell me I have to take off the intake manifold just to change the plugs!

No you don't need to take off the manifold, you just need a long extention for your socket wrench.
You also need the plug wire tool that everyone complains about. You might have one on your hood lift of your car. (Its sorta clipped to the hood lift) VW put them there for you, but they break easily. If you plan on having your car for awhile invest in a metal one. I think you can get them from a couple of different places. Try http://www.vwaftermarket.com
I doubt the OEM wires will come with the tool, but they might. When I bought my wires from Autotech they sent me a tool, which was nice, but it broke the first time I used it.

Another place to get the metal tool is Potterman. I got mine from them, and have been happy since.
You'll want a wobbly socket for your plugs, with a long extension for your ratchet. You'll also want to do your wires one at a time so you don't get them confused on the coil pack.

Re: Changing spark plugs/wires (vr6Cop)

Thanks guys that was what I wanted to hear! I do have the plastic tool, I hope it lasts long enough to do all six wires once, so next time I order some stuff I will get the metal one.

Kyle, if you are going to use the plastic puller, make sure to do it when the car is ABSOLUTELY cold (ie- after sitting overnight). Otherwise, the plastic will break very easily.

I just did mine about 1 month ago, I used the plastic tool on the hood rod.It worked fine and the whole job only took about 30 min. I taped the scocket to the to the wrench so it could not come off and I would have to get it out of the hole. (duct tape)

use anti-seize on the threads, don't overdue, a little goes a long way.
this keeps anything funky from happening with the aluminum head and steel plug being in contact with eachother (different heating/cooling properties).

Re: Changing spark plugs/wires (Frankenwagen)

I did my plugs/wires a few months ago. Easy cheezy, Used the plastic wire puller w/o a problem. I did not use anything on the plugs when I installed them, I just torqued them to 19 ft-lbs, which is the spec that was on the plug box. The manifold was not in the way.
