98 jetta glx vr6 28k mi, giac chip
Ok heres the scenario... I was about to go out with my buddies so i hop in the vr6 and try to start her up. All i get i "clik, clik, clik". Im thinking my starter is F*cked up or my alarm is going bad. so i look in my trusty bently and start off by dissconnecting the terminals and cleaning them. ok GREAT that was the problem and she started right up. problem solved, right? ok so i get going on my way bolting down the street. i start off in 1st going up to about 3500 rpms then shif to second. i was gonna take it to about 4k but when i hit about 3k it feels like i hit the rev limiter the car bogged like crazy (if u ever hit the rev limiter u know what i mean) then the damn CEL comes on. so i say ok and back off the gas hoping it was a fluke and the CEL would go off and everything would be fine. I WAS WRONG. well the end result is... 1st gear tops off @ 3500rpm 2nd @ 2500rpm 3rd @ about 2k 4th and 5th < 2k and my top speed is now 40 mph.
so now i need some major help, thoughts, ideas, gut feelings... whatever you guys got lemme hear. did i fry the chip, ecu, blow out the OXS???

HELP ME PLEASE

P.S. if someone has a vag-com in my area i would like to help a dubber out get back to me ASAP or else im forced to goto the STEALERship and dish out $60 to have them hook my car up to theier computer.

Re: Check Engine Light Woes. (vultron)

I had that same problem couple times, just go to dealership and have them reset it. And check your connection again. One time this happened to me because one of my battery terminal was loose
Now, there is one problem i'm having. It's been 3 months, 1 euro-only shop, 2 dealerships later, my DAMN CEL is still on. I tried having it resetted, but keep coming on. those shops dont want to dig for the problem because my cars got too much aftermarket stuff done.
okay, the print out says:
1 DTC recognized
16555 P0171 035
Fuel Trim,Bank1
System too Lean
Lean, eh? Okay, my car does buck slightly only when my engine is WARM, so it does fit the idea that it's running lean. a vacuum leak some where after the air sensor, hole only leak when it's big enough after expansion when warm, make sense right??
So I checked the other day, sure, one of the ring-with-bolt thingy that you screw to tighten was loose. I tighten that sucka up, pull the fuse for my engine maningment, and disconnected my battery, let that sit for a while and reconnected everything, double check everything. And I hoped I solved the problem, But the light remains on
.
It's been about 3 days now, I was hoping I could drive around and see if it will go off by itself (happened before, cross my fingers!!!) but it didnt yet.
What do you guys/gals think is going on?
Should I have the light resetted again, and see if it will come back on??
Oh another thing, I also just got cams, Schrick VGI, new lifters, gaskets, plug/wires, and new chip coded for the cams and vgi. Should I just wait and have all these put on and then deal with this problem??

Re: Check Engine Light Woes. (vultron)

Sometimes the CEL will cause the engine to go into "Limp" mode. This makes your car seem to run pretty crappy... and you need to get the ECU scanned. I suggest posting a VAGCOM request in the Events&Gatherings forum for your area. Someone may be able to help you out. If not, then take it to the dealer and fork over the money for a scan.
Hope it's not serious. Make sure you check all of the usual suspects: Gas cap too loose or moisture in coilpack (spray water mist along spark plug wires at night and check for arcing).
Good luck.

I am in West Orange and have a VAG-COM . I'm away most of the weekend but will be back on Sunday evening. Perhaps Monday if you are around we can plug it in and see what's what
