I'm sure this has been discussed but I was unable to find a topic about this. I will probably get a 2000 or 2001 Jetta 1.8T. The newer 2002's have 180hp, but the older models only have 150. Is there something different about the engines, or is it just a chip?
Speaking about chips, what manufacturers are out on the market for this kinda thing? Does a chip mod affect warranty? Which one is best to get?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Chip mods (ROCKRLR)

I have been told that the compressor wheel on the 2002 turbos has been enlarged, as have the injectors, in order to accomodate the retuned ecu and the resulting increase to 180hp. If you are concerned about warranty (understandably) apr seems to be the way to go, since their chip is undetectable by the dealer and can be switched back to stock by using the cruise control buttons. check out http://www.goapr.com for more. jim

The difference between the 150 and 180 HP is just a little ECU tweaking. Just like when you get a chip, it's not the engine they're modifying, but rather adjusting the ECU to extract more power from the engine.

Please Spiro dont consider this a flame but a little advice. We all are here to gain and share info, talk about our cars and have a great time. When you reply to a thread please make sure the info you post is not misleading or erroneous. In a recent thread someone asked about VR6 chips and your answer is to go APR. I understand you are happy with your APR chip, and that you are a brand loyalist. However, you should have take some time to read that thread question, and made sure your reply has the correct info. APR doesnt have a chip for VR6s.
Now this erroneous reply about the 1.8T. I am not well documented on 1.8T engines because I dont have one, but I do pay attention to what I read. This thread poster is asking about 2000 or 2001 1.8T engines. We have two possible engines in these years the AWD and the AWW. Both are not the same, the internals are different; however, both provide 150HP stock. The changes made to the AWW engine reflect after chipping. The AWW engine creates more power than the AWD after chipping. Is the AWW internally different than AWP? I dont know. I dont think VW has just made a software change in order to increase 30HP from the AWW to the AWP. They must have made some internal changes to accomodate the new engine demands in order to make the AWP as reliable as the AWD and AWW. However, I dont know this for a fact and more info can be extracted by some other vortexer or in the 1.8T forums.

Re: Chip mods (Richie)

I'm looking for a chip too and I like what I see at APR. I understand the warranty protection, etc. I also believe that the engine can handle it. I'd like to hear from people though about problems that they might have run into. I'm mostly worried about shortening of the life of my car... Is this something I should even be worried about... btw, do people with chips notice an increase in engine temp? significantly?
