Feel free to add in another choice. I ultimately want to add a T3/T4 turbo kit.

Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (AudiTTq)

a little lopsided so far, eh?
Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (John A)

Why is it like that? Why don't people like to program their boost in different gears?
Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (AudiTTq)

nobody has been able to get a boost controller to show the same gains as a chip in at least the VW applications. that's probably part of the reason....

Perhaps with the Boost controller, you can also add on a Engine timing controller and a Field Fuel controller. Then you can set it all up anyway you want it.
Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (AudiTTq)

has anyone figured out to run it with dbw? if so, id say get boost controller and apex afc
Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (davy913)

who really wants to splice into thier wiring harness into the ECU?? I mean really....fudge THAT!!!

Wouldn't that be pretty much what the chip does? Manages boost and fueling to optimize power? No flames intended, but that's my take on the chip.
If you get a chip, most companies will upgrade your software for a rather small fee if you go for a different turbo. Might as well start out right, rather than buying an MBC, then getting a new turbo and buying the chip anyway.

Well, let me see. If I got a T3/T4 turbo, nobody has a program for me. I would need to send my car down to San Fran fo ATP to work on it for a week. And even after I do that and my car is perfect, as soon as I drive back to Seattle, it will be a different elevation and different conditions which might not work in my area. Would be a better idea if I tune it myself. I mean, how hard could it be?

Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (AudiTTq)

well, for most people, the chip is the obvious choice -- because most dont want to have to learn about fuel maps, and to most, $500 is a good deal for +50 hp / +80lb/ft
for what you're doing i'd probably think it's a good idea. talk to 18billyt....
Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (John A)

I think you'll still need a chip to raise some parameters (like max boost for example)...or some clamping circuits.

How hard is it to install one of these puppies?

Typically the place you buy it from does the install as part of the cost. I heard you mention Seattle, where exactly are you located? I plan to get my Upsolute chip from Bahn Brenner in Auburn. Cost is $325 installed. They have to remove the ECU, pull the chip, and burn new software to it. Then reinstall ECU and you are on your way.
The Apexi computers would be awesome but I don't think they run in VW's like they do in Honda, Acura, etc but I could be wrong...
P.S. Whomever you get the T03/04 kit from should include new ECU software...if not that's a rip.
Re: Chip or APEXi Boost controller? (A-Money)

325 is pretty good actually, I'm in Redmond, WA(home of my best friend, Mr. Gates). Maybe we can hook up and go up there. I kinda want a Boost controller, but nobody in the area is qualified to install one. VW and Audi are a rare car in this area to upgrade.

Oh Bill is your friend as well? Dang everyone knows him these days.

Yeah, when were you planning on getting the car chipped? I was shooting after the first of the year. All these damn GB's here are draining me....

I haven't really looked into the boost controller yet. The thing is with our cars the boost is controlled by the ECU which I don't think is the case with other turbo cars. That's why adding a Apexi or similar is not a easy job. Might look into this more, definitely ask Bahn Brenner is they got any ideas. There are lots of good shops in Vancouver, BC and a couple in Portland, OR but nothing really around this area.

Yeah, Bill and I played some golf the other day at Sahalee. He was asking me for advice for how to take over the world.

I want to go talk to Bahn. I want to install a boost controller because I want to be able to switch back to stock when I need to upgrade to K04 kit(which my friend is selling to me in a couple of months)which comes with a GIAC K04 chip. After I get the K04, I like the idea of turning that kit up some more when I put in 100octane gas. Email me and we can talk off the forum.
