I've always loved these things. It's the kind of blind love that probably means I've had a matchbox version when I was little, though I can't remember.

Supposedly built in France to haul newspapers around quicker than you would in a truck, as well as for ambulance duty. The double rear axle meant that the weight carrying capacity was increased dramatically.

The earliest are built on the DS and SM models, but the seemingly most common ones are CX's. There are some XM's and BX's as well.

My dream garage would include a CX Loadrunner for sure. If anyone has, please post up information/pictures of these things.

Some pictures:

A lot of these pictures were stolen shamelessly from this great thread: http://www.forum-auto.com/automobiles-mythiques-exception/section5/sujet383145.htm

I also found this thread, which shows how a lot of these would have looked when new: http://www.citroenmodelcars.nl/html/gallerytissier.htm

Easy to stretch as they are FWD... no drive shaft to worry about

I wonder how they beefed up the air suspension? What's the load capacity on the BX one? I assume it had 1.6 liter I4 like most BX... I guess it may be marginally useful if you are in the business of moving empty boxes.

Reminds me a lot of this, behold Michelin's tire testing monster with rear mounted V8.

Vehicle used by Michelin to test tyres. Underneath the vehicle a tyre would be mounted in the middle of the vehicle, so Michelin could simulate various running conditions.Remember Michelin owned Citroen at the time.

I already saw it before but, good god, that Dual V8 DS (a.k.a. PLR or "Mille-pattes") is frightening . (more info about it here: http://ranwhenparked.blogspot.com/2009/09/michelin-plr.html).

A lot of old Citroëns use to somehow freak me out as a kid, mostly the trucks and vans. I always thought they look creepy.

Type H:

350 / Belphegor (naming a car after a ghost? Really?): :p

But I remember seeing a lot of these CXs used as ambulances:

Most of them were build by "Tissier". A little bit of history and many pictures available here. Unfortunately it's all in french ... But you can use an online translator to get an idea on who was Mr Tissier and his 6 wheeled monstrosities. ;)
