Stopped by the Autozone to have them check what is causing the CEL light to come on my girlfriends 2001 Jetta. After the guy told me what the computer says is causing the CEL, he said he would reset the light in order to turn it off. I thought, cool. Well, afterwards when we drove away, I noticed her aftermarket stereo system was not working properly. Had to turn the volume all the way up, and it just sounded very very muffled. Has been working perfectly up to that point, in fact, was listening to it as we drove into the Autozone parking lot.
Obviously, resetting the code light did something, but I have no clue. I checked the fuses for the stereo, disconnected the battery terminals for a few minutes, but nothing. It's an Alpine 9826 head unit with a JL audio amp.
Could this be something with the security system?
Thanks for any help!!

Re: Clearing CEL Code causing aftermarket stereo to stop working properley - Help! (mofaster)

If the headunit is wired properly, then clearing codes should have no effect on its operation. I clear codes and do VAG-COM stuff on my Jetta all the time and never has it caused a problem with my Alpine headunit. I guess it might be possible to mess with the headunit somehow if the K-line of the car's diagnostic system was accidentally connected to a power wire on the headunit. Usually this causes problems with the scanner though and not the other way around. It's a VW though, so anything is possible.

Re: Clearing CEL Code causing aftermarket stereo to stop working properley - Help! (VgRt6)

Thanks man!
It was professionally installed by a very reputable company, in fact, I am good friends with the manager, so I assume everything was done correctly. Just seems way too coincedental that everything was working perfectly until the guy reset the code. I guess I will have to take it back into the audio installer and have them give it a look. Very very odd.
Oh, and thanks for your DIY on the brake light switch!! You da man!

It seems purely coincidental to me, but it's definitely worth getting checked out, especially if you friend will hook you up. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Glad the DIY helped out. IM me anytime that you have a question about the car. I'll help out whenever I can.

If it's not something with the K-wire, then:
1) there's another problem (electrical) related to the CEL or not that affected the audio system.
2) resetting the power just fuxxed up the HU settings and it needs to be retuned (or maybe the amp if there's one).

Thanks man, I will do the little diagnostic check with my voltmeter and a resistor. I am starting to think that this is the problem.
