Well everything is shifting and driving just fine... for now. I am getting a rather loud clicking/clunking from what sounds like the front drivers side. If you ever stuck a playing card into the spokes of a bicycle, thats what it sounds like. Exept the noise is definatly metal. Cant hear it making any noise while accelertting. Any ideas?

I have this same clicking noise when taking off the gas. Tried to fix it by installing a new axle but it's still there. Obviously not a CV joint. Any ideas?
(I already installed new ball joints, control arm bushings, struts and dog bone mount and installed the original axle after replacing a boot)

many are convinced its an axle problem. if that is so and you still have clicks, maybe you replaced the wrong cv joint.
otherwise i am going to throw out the possiblilty that this could be a differental issue.
mine also clicks while costing in or out of gear, and it stops with the slightest bit of gas.
what part would click while rolling, but will stop and operate normally under torque?
agian i am not ruling out the cv, just wondering.
edit: also if its just cv then it would happen in an automatic also

mine just got louder, i am going to check if anything looks different. i just read on another forum that it could be due to a torn cv.
" the fact that sound starts when you let off the accelerator can most likely be an attribute of a loose part loosing centrifugal force, perhaps something like a cv boot or something along those lines has vibrated itself loose. when the torque is released from it, the wheels instantly begin to slow down, this might be when it is happening... "

this was for a newer car though. mine is 15 years old which is why i am skeptical of my own problem, although it does have a torn cv boot, which i will try to replace. we'll se what happens.

based on the fact that noone with the actual same symptoms have followed up, my guess is that this is a life ender.

well, ive been sitting on this problem for a while, driving a ford escort in the mean time. after lots of research i have found that yes it is definitly a transmission problem. if your vw clicks rapidly while not under load you need transmission repair. its funny because it shifts and drives fine (probably not for very long tho) nevertheless will cost $$$ to keep on the road.

anyone with this issue have it fixed? how much $$$ exactly?

2004 gti vr6

Im having the same issue, the car is prefectely drivable (for now) shifts right and smooth. accelerates fine, still alot of pull. But as soon as you let off the gas you get a clicking noise. and it seems like it is putting pressure on the transmission since it will slow in about have the time as it normaly would. please help :( i want my gti to live a long life

I had the same thing goin on for the past month or so. Transmission just locked up on monday.... Was making a horribly loud clicking noise as I was coasting into my neighborhood in 2nd gear then all of a sudden while in first gear coming down the driveway the car came to a hault....
took it out and the clutch is still new looking. both outer cv's were blown and the inner axle bolts were loose.
My theory is that the outer cv's were bad and ended up shaking the internals of the diff bad enough to break something.

I'll know more when I tear it apart.
