16V Tranny into a A3 2.0L Jetta

Has anyone ever done this? My tranny blew about a week ago, and the first tranny I found was a used close-ratio 16V tranny. I'm kinda interested to see how the gearing is going to feel. If anyone has any information on this let me know. Thanks.

I have thought about this conversion- I think fifth gear needs to be changed in the 16V tranny to bring down your R's on the highway. Other than that it's a bolt up operation- utilizing a 16V clutch set up of course.

Yep bolts right up. Its still an 020 tranny. Although swaping out 5th gear is optional

Horny man walking. The 16V tranny is awesome. 2nd gear pulls like a mad cow and never lets up well into the red. I do, however, agree with FLY. The 5th gear on my 16V '91 Passat is a pain becuase at 140km/h I am reving at exactly 4000.

For me, a person that loves to drive on the highway at a constant 140km/h, this higher RPM hurts
because I eventually feel I need to give the car a rest. Anyhoo, the 16V tranny is great. It will take some gettin' used to in how to launch the car and when to shift but if you get it working: GREAT!
For instance, you need to get the REVs up for a good launch and spin the tires, inevitably, becuase if you launch at like 2000 the car will be REALLY SLUGGISH until you get her to about 3500. After that each shift should be done at 6000+ unlike the 2.0's that stop making power this high up.
Well, I hope that info helped. I have tons of experience on the 16V tranny relating to driving, but not much mechanically.

What was the approx. cost of the sourced tranny? I am thinking about rebuilding/upgrading a 16V on the sly for when I put too much pressure on mine.

16V clutch?? hmmm......I'm getting a Centerforce dual-friction clutch. Is that going to be ok? The guy at New German Performance said that that would be fine.
Dave at New German Performance had it for a personal transmission and is going to rebuild it, doing the bolt upgrade and everything for around $850.

Ok, I just got done talking to Dave and he said that in the 16V tranny only 1st and 2nd gear are closer and 3rd, 4th, and 5th are normal. So the 5th gear conversion really isn't much of a prob.

he probably means HIS 16v trans is like that.
in a stock 16v thans, the only gears taht are the sme as the a3 trans are 1st and reverse. 2,3,4 and 5 are all shorter.
as for the clutch, i would stick with stock 16v PP and 8v disc. dont waste money on "exotic" dual friction, 4 puck this and that. you wont need it, and it will just make your ride harsh.

Don't you need a 16V flywheel or can you run the 8V clutch and 16PP? I though the splines on the input shaft were different.
Re: Close Ratio 16V Tranny into a A3 2.0L Jetta (Fast2.0L)

youll need EVERYTHING from a 16v except the clutch disc.
