Coil battery wire connection

My 97 GLX has been running a little rough on start up so I called the local VW guru and he asked some questions and surmised that the coil is shorting due to bad plug wires.... or something like that. Does this make sense to any of you? He said he has seen this occur several times on GLX's with about 90K. I looked up the coil on one of the parts sites and confirmed his price of around $260.00 plus 90 for plug wires. Yow
At least I won't have much in labor since he said it's about a 15 minute job to replace.

Re: Coil battery wire connection (slayman)

If your wires are shorting out why not replace the wires?
Or, atleast do that first since they need replacing and see if that solves your problem.
A plug wire that is shorting out can often be seen in you simply look for arcing/sparks along your wires while the vehicle is running. Those sparks mean that your spark glug in that cylinder either did not fire at all or did not fully fire causing your engine to stumble since you were minus one cylinder.

The coil pack is indeed expensinve.. But, replace just the wires first, see if it helps. If it doesn't, open the hood at night and see if you can see arching in the coil pack (you can spray a little bit of water on it).. If you can see arching, then replace the coil pack (or seal it with silicone)...
Good luck

Thanks for the input. He did replace the wires and then checked the coil and found it was ok PHwew http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
However, when he plugged it in to the computer he found three other codes:
Vehicle speed something or other ( I know I haven't had it over 80 since the last time it was coded)
O2 sensor - broken wires found fixed that but it still is showing that code
Something to do with the fuel evap system not reading couldn't figure that one out either.
Seems like a pretty good guy to work with though. Charged me for 1.5 hours with all that plus an oil change and tire rotation.

I think it's Engine Speed...which can be bad...not that you sped down the road but the engine rpms exceeded a safe level..
The O2 sensor usually needs to be reset (i can't remember if or how it's done on the passats)
The last one could be EVAP canister purge regulator valve..
I dunno...I have a list of codes on my site http://vr6stress.vwmafia.net/passat/
models -> b4 specific -> b4 diagnostic trouble codes
Have fun with it...lol
(if you got anything send it to me for the site)
