I don't know if this is common but on really cold mornings (-10c and lower) It is really difficult to get my car in gear, changing into second is hardly any easier. I'm not talking notchy, if feels as though it is almost locking out on me. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Re: cold mornings stuck shifter (s8tan)

Yeah I get the same thing. I just let it warm up a bit. Put the car in neutral and let out clutch so that the gears move and get the tranny fluid moving and warmed up. You could switch to synthetic tranny fluid like Red Line and that should help.

I've been having problems too, but not in the cold weather. Just first gear, mostly when I stop at a light and take it out of gear and put it into first. It just doesn't want to go in at all. I have to put it into secound then back into first and I'm cool.Any one with this problem??

I have the same problem. One thing I do, and no not Fast&Furious style, is double clutch your shifts until the car's been moving for a while. It takes the load off your synchros and your shifts are smooth. You know, clutch in, shift fron first to neutral, clutch out, clutch in, shift to second and so on. Try it tomorrow morning.

Re: cold mornings stuck shifter (Masonbrick)

Almost all my downshifts are double clutched. Maybe I will try this synthetic tranny oil. It is getting annoying and I just don't want to deal with it any more. My girlfriends last car (89 civic) never had this problem. It's a wonder why my car does.

Got the same problem... It was -19 C this morning and shifting was very difficult, especially the 2nd gear. It loosens up over a couple of kms.
I heard way back when of a little trick: Put it in drive / gear, with your foot on the clutch, of course. I heard that it helped transmissions get warm faster. But maybe it's another urban legend

I agree it's just the fluid (and the cold metal parts) that need to be warmed up. Mine is the same way. BTW- These cars come with synthetic tranny fluid from the factory. It's speced right in the fluid capacity charts and doesn't need to be replaced at all. Or so they say...
