Re: Concerns fo' the winter... (TA373)
1. Check your oil and make sure yoau rent leaking coolant through the head. If you have no visible sign of loss and can smell the coolant that just might be it.
Also check to make sure your heater core and all of your hoses are intact. If you haven;t replaced all the hoses now is a good time to do it. While you are at it -- change your waterpump and thermostat & flush and refill with G12. Pump is a good 2 hour job if your AC is in the way
2. Redline MT-90 .. you do it in neutral. Takes about 2.4 quarts. You also need a 17mm (?) socket to open the drain and fill holes
3. Sounds like a vacuum issue
4. Can't help ya -- my Bentley is out on loan
5. Do the timing belt again (every 60K miles or so), change all of the belts & hoses, do a compression & leakdown test, change the fuel filter, etc.
quote:

My jetta needs a little TLC this winter and I'm trying to decide what to do first.
1. Over time the coolant level drops, and the coolant light flashes. (Time frame: 2-3 months). There's never any puddle and I don't hear any noises. Occasionially I can smell the maple syrup smell of the anti-freeze
-Diagnosis: Water pump?
-Advice Needed: How hard to replace, how expensive is the part?
2. My shifter is notchy as hell, and in the mornings tends to grind going into 2nd, with normal driving while cold(not at all spirited)
-Diagnosis: Crappy VW Tranny Fluid. Replace with redline
-Advice needed: How hard is it to drain the fluid, what gear will I need to do it?
3. The engine tends to make a noise a lot like a turbo (a really quiet one) when cold
-Diagnosis: ???
-Advice Needed: ???
4. My steering cuts out much like the person in this post described
-Diagnosis: Tighten belt
-How (does the bentley show it?---I just don't feel like lookin in vain)
5. The car has about 146k miles on it, and the only 2 major things it's had done are the timing belt and the clutch...are there any other things that should be looked at regardless? Things I should check just for the hell of it?
Anyway, hope this all makes sense...I wanna try to 'fortify' the car a bit over the winter.
Thanks,
