Considering a 1600 Dual Port VW Bug: Worth It? Performance & Upgrades?

I am new to the site, new to air cooled motors. I have my eye on 2 local bugs, both 1600 dual ports. One is a autoshift, sound like its a manual without the clutch, that's not my point. Are these worth owning or is it better to stick with a standard clutch? Also, I plan on rebuilding whatever I get, maybe a cam, carbs, adding a little extra power. To me, 75 hp on a car that weighs next to nothing equals a lot of fun. I know the cars are pretty doggy stock, but with a little work, how quick are they? Can they run with modern traffic?

Hi blee :) ,(or should I call you blobz:confused:;) )
~180 HP 2086CC in a ~700 LB rail

got me from 0 to ~100 MPH in an 1/8th mile off road:cool: .

It's called an https://www.google.com/#q=vw+autostick ;) , I'd stick with a manual;) .

from

I started out with a simple 1641CC engine

which, oddly enough ran a https://www.google.com/webhp?tab=ww&ei=S7fRVKXuIZbWoASJr4HYDw&ved=0CAoQ1S4#q=16.41+second+1/4+mile
Plenty enough to keep up with modern normal traffic:cool::thumbup: .

hello,

I cant comment much on the autostick but i will say that a stock 1600 dual port will keep up with traffic no problem until you get on the highway, then its a bit sketchy but it does the job.

and with just a basic bit of work, and only a little added power they are a ton of fun.

definitely a steep learning curve when it comes to driving them though, I don't know if my issues were old bug or learning how to drive a carb'd car but I still struggle a bit after a few months of our project

oh and welcome to the vortex, couldn't help but notice the 2012 gli in the car profile, hope to see you over in the MKVI crowd sometime and would love to see some new action here if you do grab one of those bugs

Thanks all

I am not new to projects, just new to air cooled. Over the past couple years, I have spent a lot of time playing around with rotary motors. One day, I would love to slap a 13b in a bug and rip it up. Is there a good shop manual that would be more helpful than any other? I know with the rotary motors, I would have been lost without the mazda shop manual I had. Yup, currently have a 2012 GLI, auto but it does have the paddles. I am actually just hitting my 40k, looking for a #17 allen. I did just find out the drawbacks of direct injection motors, I was unaware of the carbon build up issue.

I have done a little homework on air cooled motors, they look pretty strait forward, I really like the ability to interchange parts between all sizes (forgive me if i'm wrong). I can't wait to get started, I live in Minnesota, so it's going to be a few months before I normally get into garage mode.

Hi blee :) ,
https://www.google.com/webhp?tab=ww&ei=7frSVKT2Cs-toQSf04LYAg&ved=0CAoQ1S4#q=rotary+in+a+vw+bug

The manual you're looking for would be a https://www.google.com/#q=vw+bentley+manual ;):thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: .

You should be able to pick up the newest version of https://www.google.com/webhp?tab=ww&ei=rfjSVLySCIuJoQS1noKgCw&ved=0CAoQ1S4#q=vw+fuel+additive from a dealer, but I found it best & less expensive to stick with https://www.google.com/webhp?tab=ww...bhp?tab=ww&ei=AfrSVPi-G4PwoATPjoDYAg&ved=0CAoQ1S4#q=VW+and+chevron+with+techron ;) .
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?7115605-Carbon-Build-Up
https://www.google.com/#q=vw+intake+carbon+buildup+covered+under+warranty , we've been doing lots of manifold replacements coupled with head left on cleanings covered under warranty, you may want to rethink your choice of shop;) .

All parts from different air cooled generations are designed to operate with that generation, cross-application takes some research which you have time to do, just start relentlessly reading & asking questions;) .

Warranty

I know this isn't the correct forum for this discussion but it looks like you are a tech? You have been doing warranty cleaning? I will contact the dealer again today, I really do appreciate the help.

I picked up a bug today

I took the leap and picked up a 1974 light blue bug today. Has standard manual and 1600 dual port. Runs and drives but it does have some under body rust issues. The front sub frame needs replacement or repair but other than that it's in pretty nice shape. Funny thing is the body is in amazing condition, two very small areas with surface rust but that's it. Even has a sun roof. I would post a pic but can't figure out how to do so on my cell.
