Considering a 1998 GTI

Hi,
I've been lurking around here for a couple years on-and-off but never really had much to add. I recently wrecked my 1994 Ford Probe GT (yeah I know but that's another story) and I am in the market for a different car. I am considering a 1998 VW GTI with 45,000 miles for $9500. This is not the VR6 model but I'm not concerned with speed really. What do you all think of the price? I couldn't find a "newbie" guide around here but what are somethings that I should look for when considering this car? Problem areas? Is this a fun car to own or is it a Ford Probe like maintenance nightmare?
Basically, I just want some opinions from people who own these cars to let me know if I should do it or if I should hold off for something different.
Thanks,
Seth

Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (sethjvm)

price sounds reasonable
i paid around 8k for my 97 GTI 2.0 (4 cyl) with around 80k
so the price is good
you wont have to worry about maintanence nightmares either
its a VW
good luck
what color ? 5spd ?
Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (VRsixVW)

That is an awesome price for that year/mileage. Is that from a dealer or private party? I know most dealers in this area would want around $13k for that car. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Its red. Not too sure about the tranny yet. I have an insider at a dealership who found this car for me. Its defininitely different than most cars on the road since there were only about 20,000 Golfs sold in 1998. At least its not a Probe.
Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (sethjvm)

The 98's are great. You'll get nice cloth sport seats, the cool silver gauges, red stiched steering wheel and shift boot. And the tornado red looks great too. Check out the links in my sig. I have a red 98 GTi.
Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (sethjvm)

i bought a 1998 GTI 4cyl with 45K miles on it about a year ago....the car has not offered one problem, except a buzzing noise just recently....and if you decided you wanted power later, you could always supercharge it or turbo it....i highly recommend the car, i paid 11,5 for mine in catalina blue....check out my sig if you want to see it....
Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (sethjvm)

Ooh that's gonna be slowed compared to the probe =]
Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (TheWildOne)

yeah, it might be a little slower but my priorities have shifted since I get my speed fix on a motorcycle now.
Thanks for eveyrone's opinion so far!

Is there any sort of "how to" Website that might explain the airbox/K&N mod and any other nifty mods?

Don't get it!

Dubster,
Why not? Is there a good reason I shouldn't?

Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (sethjvm)

GTi's are a nice step from a probe GT. in the 2.0 version, a bit slower. But many of the same ammentities. I almost bought a probe gt, drove 3 before I bought my golf.
Enjoy the comfort of VW"s and the whole Dub community.
Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (Slapshotnerd)

tornado red is the way to go too
Re: Considering a 1998 GTI (28)

Actually the Probe was a riot to drive, it just sucked as far as quality goes. Well, I can always get the neuspeed supercharger.

It seems like a nice group here.
